Close-up photo of a group of dried black pepper fruits on a wooden surface. Each fruit has a thin, wrinkled fleshy part, surrounding a large stone (endocarp), which contains a single seed. A few fruits are cut in half to show the white storage tissue of the seed.

Endosperm is triploid (a unique character in Flowering Plants), but in a few lineages, the endosperm’s job is taken over by the perisperm, a diploid maternal tissue surrounding the megaspore. A classic example of perisperm is Piper nigrum. #cotyledon #Piperaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Photo of a group of leaves. Each leaf is ovate with an acute apex. The petiole attaches on the underside of the blade near the center. On the upper side of the blade, the point of attachment is indicated by a pale central spot from which all the veins originate. Photo by Scott Zona CC BY-NC 2.

Leaf vocabulary 2: PELTATE means shield-shaped & describes the attachment of the petiole to the ± middle (rather than the edge) of the blade, as in Peperomia hernandiifolia. The petiole attaches to the back of the blade where the leaf veins originate. #Piperaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱
