Equinox - Etymology, Origin & Meaning "point at which the sun crosses the earth's equator, making day and night of equal length… See origin and meaning of equinox.

Happy Spring to those who celebrate 🌱

TIL “equinox” comes from Latin aequus (equal) + nox (night), aka “equal night.” Same root in French équinoxe.

Which is exactly what’s happening. Day and night are (almost) the same length.

Hey #plantnerds, does anyone know why my horse chestnut tree is doing this, and what I can do to reverse it?

Under- or over-watered? I never can tell with these orchids

#Botany2025 has been so fun, re-energizing (while also exhausting? 😂), & soul-healing: I love you #plantnerds 🫶 Biggest surprise was running into recent @colbycollege.bsky.social grad (& one of my 1st ever students in senior sem!)! Can't wait to bring more Colby Botanists to future meetings!

A mixed container of small summer plants: hot pink flowered Fuchsia 'Whiteknights Cheeky' has wee hot pink flowers, and is underplanted with a white flowered Nemesia, deep purple Scaevola, a bright yellow Lantana (not yet blooming), the cheerful tiny yellow daisies of Sanvitalia (which also wilt at the first sign of dry soil, so are handy as a watering reminder), a white trumpet-flowered Torenia that has a deep purple throat (beloved of bumblebees even if they have to wiggle their fuzzy bottoms and kick with their little legs to get deep enough for the nectar), as well as creeping yellow-flowered Mecardonia and ferny Leptinella 'Platt's Black' as underplantings, both out of frame but pleasing. It's early in the season but it's my favorite combination thus far, we'll see what I assemble this week, my palette of plants this year is proving pretty fun.

Fuchsia 'Whiteknights Cheeky' looking peppy in its new planting. The cheerful little hot pink flowers are a hummingbird favorite, and the foliage will darken to a pleasing burgundy as the summer sun intensifies.

My newly-planted blackcurrant started developing brown edged leaves and dying from the ground up. I gave it a little sulphate of potash and told it that it just had transplant shock and would be ok. It listened. Plants are easy to befriend.

Anyone in zone 7 planting Mirabilis jalaba aka 4 O’Clocks? How do you start your seeds and when? I am thinking about soaking them and sowing them directly in the ground, but I can’t find information on what time of year. #plantsofbluesky #plantnerds #seedsofchange #resistancegardening

Photo of Naematelia aurantia, a bright yellow lobed jelly fungi growing on a standing dead white oak, with a brown white oak leaf in the lower left foreground. This fungi is also called golden ear and sometimes called Witches' butter though that name is used for many jelly fungi) and it is known for parasitizing Stereum (false turkey tail) as shown here with small yellow-brown shelf fungi.

This goo is edible! And has medicinal properties.

The world is so interesting and my curiosity about it is the number one thing that keeps me alive. Especially when it comes to plants and fungi. I am one of those absolute #PlantNerds who wont shut up about how cool plants (and fungi) are.
