Me surrounded by gloriously scented Mexican orange blossom across the park from Edinburgh Castle. Had a brilliant time at #Redux2024 discussing #OpenAccess & @openlibhums.bsky.social ! Thanks again to Edinburgh UP for hosting such a lovely event. See you again soon Scotland 🏴
Connected with so many people at #Redux2024 this week & was very much in it so as did not share thoughts here (or the other place). I recommend checking the # for good stuff.
I loved the conference. Thanks ALPSP!

The University Press Redux Conference, organized by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), comes to an end today! HUP's Managing Editor, Anna-Mari Vesterinen, and Publication Specialist, Leena Rautjärvi, have enjoyed their time in beautiful Edinburgh.
#Redux2024
In addition to #redux2024, #LibCALM & #ELUNA2024 (Ex Libris Users of North America) continuing today, National Acquisitions Group (NAG) Collection Development Group #NAGcd14 & Public Libraries Forum #NAGplf24 have BlueSky content to follow. So many library conferences this week!

Join the conversation on accessible publishing!
Today, our Director of Sales and Marketing, Vanessa de Bueger, will participate in the 'European Accessibility Act' panel at #Redux2024.
A fantastic opportunity to share knowledge about what publishers can do to make content more accessible.
On that note - I think S2O are really difficult to explain to senior stakeholders and often to justify to funding bodies. Its taken me a really long time to get it, and every model is slightly different, I cannot find the time to learn each publisher's approach.
#Redux2024
Q8 What are the benefits and risks in S2O for both books & journals?
Answer: Enlightened self interest in journal S2O but books often need more funds. Re-allocating subscriptions budgets. Can only benefit from scale.
Described as a simple model that's hard to explain. #Redux2024
But if you want to hear more, it's one of the topics covered in the "What Libraries Need" session later. #Redux2024
My view on the differing relationships between book publishers & journal publishers (from someone who buys v few books) is that libraries often feel like we have little choice and little power when dealing with journals.
Books, I can usually find an alternative. Nature doesn't have one. #Redux2024
7th Q: What can book learners learn from journal publishers or visa versa?
Answer: Book publishers are like small specialist food shops compared to supermarkets. From the outside it looks like book publishers have better relationship with libraries than journal publishers. #Redux2024
6th Q: What opportunities are there? Including AI?
Answer: Don't underestimate democratisation of knowledge. Lots of data and usage opportunities but need more time/investment. New opportunities for new entries to market. Double down on curator of knowledge role. #Redux2024
5th Q: What are the unintended consequences of OA?
Answer: Challenge around implementation and mechanisms can unintentionally undermine benefits. Inequitable assumptions - all presses have equal access to libraries being one. Assumption that libraries have budgets to support OA! #Redux2024
Back in the session for #Redux2024 - I'm in the session on open access pilot schemes. Very interesting to hear about it from a publisher perspective.
Nice to see @tashamc.bsky.social's figure showing different publishing models.
Eurgh, struggling to turn on Conference-Beth. Just sitting quietly drinking my coffee instead of trying to meet folks I don't know.
#redux2024
At #Redux2024 the conversation has been about creating communities.
Speaking of which...I'm planning putting together a Pride webinar for librarians with speakers from publisher LGBTQ+ staff networks/groups.
I've a few thoughts on who I'm going to approach, but if you've suggestions let me know.
Lovely to see lots of posts on BlueSky yesterday from #LibCALM (and there will be more later today I’m sure) and posts from #redux2024 coming through now. Keep letting me know of library and information relevant conferences and events with hashtags that you’ll be using, so I can add them to the list
Next session is about "Building community" from
Christie Henry from Princeton University Press - but also, a million other initiatives!
#Redux2024
Stirring opening Keynote from Amina Shah, Librarian at National Library of Scotland. Lots of lovely poetry and images and a reminder that public libraries are democracy in action. #Redux2024
She's certainly hit the 'feelings' part - it's actually a bit overwhelming the lovely stories about how her parents met and what libraries meant to her & her family through her life.
#Redux2024
Amina Shah talking about "The role of Libraries in connecting people and ideas". Asking for a conversation rather than a broadcast.
About to share some personal stories and talk about feelings and connectedness around books. #redux2024
Ah! It's the first in person conference since pre-Covid times. That would be why I don't really know it, I really struggle to engage with online conferences.
Looks like a good programme though. #Redux2024
Arrived at #Redux2024 and sat eagerly awaiting the keynote by Amina Shah - I really enjoyed her talk last time I heard her speak so should be good.
Feels a bit weird to be at a conference where I know very few people!
