My display showing the reed screen in progress. I am explaining how I realized I had my warp thread too far apart after I had it half way done, when I complied an average of warps / width of 26 museum screens. Photo courtesy of my Laurel Mister Agnes Schere.
The final screen unfurled. 14ft long. Which I'd will cover about half of the walls of a 10ft diameter yurt. Photo courtesy of my Laurel, Mistress Agnes Schere.
Thank goodness this particular folly is essentially done. The reed screens last weft reed was placed at Salon Artificum, thus ending 4 solid months of putzing around. An edge binding and some card woven straps are left. 14ft long... oof. Taking a week off.

Last minute tweaking for my reed screen display. Decided to not go with the typical banquet table display, and focus more on an insitue format.
Last minute tweaking for my display at Salon Artificum next weekend.
It's crunch time to finish any write ups, and cover the modern.
5x8 feet is not a lot of space. Lol

My red and blue reed screen. 12'4"
Museum reed screen 9'4"
A small section of the reed screen so enable counting number of reeds. 50 reeds total.
I did the math. My reed screen is longer than a museum screen with the same reed count
Museum piece is ~1100 reeds / 284cm (9'4")
My screen is ~1100 reeds / 378cm (12'4")
So my reeds must be larger, or the screen artisans are choosing narrower reed size.

Red and blue stripes on my reed screen.
Progress on my reed screen
The indigo and madder (lac overdye) turned out even better than I anticipated.
I do wish I went with a narrower plain reed strip on the edges. There will be a binding strip sewed over it, but it's wider than I pictured in my head.

Yurt khana wall section being painted barn red before being tied together.
My reed screen display needs a good background. So quickly building a single panel khana yurt wall. Painting it with milk paint barn red cour.
Salon Artifum is less than a month away.

Trying to find a native reed grass to substitute the central Asian reeds. Bluestem is floppy, but twitch grass stands very straight. Six varieties of reeds growing in a grow tent. The twitch and bluestem are approximately 36" tall.
The Reed screen project is progressing. My ongoing testing of native reed substitutes for the central Asian reeds has already shown a front funner. I thought Big Bluestem would be the winner, but it's tending to be floppy. Twitch grass stands straighter. 36"

Just shy of 6 feet of wool wrapped reeds are done for my reed screen project. Madder red, and indigo blue stripes.
About 6ft of wool wrapped reeds have been completed on my period reed screen project. That gets me to approximately to the half way point. I will keep going until I run out of reeds or roving.

Red and blue wrapped reeds. The red is madder/lac dyed. The blue is indigo dipped four times.
A detail from a 1492 illumination that shows reed screens in a yellow/green striped pattern and a red and blue striped reed screen.
I finally decided on the stripe pattern for my reed screen. Red and blue striped (20/20 reed). Each stripe will be approximately 4" wide. Based on an illumination detail from 1492.

The roving spun reeds have been started. The screen will be in red and blue primarily.
Still haven't settled on the reed screens pattern. I do know it will be solid stripes as it's the only pattern I can document in period.
Until I reach a decision, I will just wind up blanks mostly in red and blue.

Have my wool roving for the reed screen project. Three colour's from natural dyes available in central asia. Red = Madder Blue = Indigo Yellow = Pomegranate
I can not import the type of reed grass used in reed screens from central asia. Instead I am growing a few different cultivated types of tall grass reeds from a native blue stem species. Also going to try growing bluestem from seed.
I ordered madder and indigo for my reed screen project. Those will be the bulk of the colour. Red and blue. I'll be trying pomegranate to dye a yellow.
I'll be dyeing my colored roveing by next weekend..
I have started my display pots of reed plants too.
