The Roatta mission (June 1941) One of the darkest figures in the Regio Esercito is sent to Cyrenaica to "fix" the Italian command and verify its relations with the Germans.

Trucks, ships, drums & docks - Army logistics in Graziani's Libya (1940) An outlook on Italian logistics in the North African theater of WWII - The first offensive towards Egypt: a General who is at least as inadequate as his chain of command and the means at his disposal.

Graziani continues to demand what wasn't granted to Balbo: vehicles and resources. While his plethoric organization is forced to take into account the new center of gravity of the operations at Tobruk and Bardia. buff.ly/HDKETVW #WW2 #WWII #desertwar #libya #regioesercito #northafrica #logistics

Trucks, ships, drums & docks - Army logistics in Balbo's Libya (1936-1940) An outlook on Italian logistics in the North African theater of WWII - Balbo's delusional plans, Badoglio's obstructionism and the stark reality in the field on the eve of the conflict

Balbo is dealing with interesting but unrealistic offensive plans towards Egypt (systematically torpedoed by Badoglio), while Intendancy and Army Corps Services are starting to show their limits buff.ly/9QouJD6 #WW2 #WWII #history #modernhistory #desertwar #northafrica #regioesercito #logistics

22-24 April, 1941. A polemical interlude in Cyrenaica. Gariboldi meets Rommel at Ain el-Gazala. Both will vent their mutual frustrations with letters of reproach addressed to the same people.

A dialogue between two deaf men is the prelude to several days of approaches and probing operations in Tobruk. Some of them, particularly unpleasant for the Axis. buff.ly/vrdfWwC #WW2 #WWII #desertwar #northafrica #regioesercito

Tobruk. 17 April, 1941 Like their German colleague Streich, Italian Divisional Generals are starting to bite the bullet

Tobruk. April 16, 1941 A bad day for another Battalion of Trento Division. Perhaps the Italian and German tanks could have done more? Don't ask Rommel, he didn't know much about it...

After the sacrifice of a Trento Division's Regiment, another one arrived at Tobruk. But it was another piecemeal unit: just the I/62nd Battalion; ready (kind of...) to start another offensive. It didn't end well. buff.ly/JUyIV93 #WW2 #WWII #desertwar #northafrica #regioesercito

The 6th Czechoslovak Division. On May 24th 1918, the Division – 11,840 strong, in Italian uniform and Alpine hat and insignia without stars with the national colors – took the oath at the Vittoriano in Rome in the presence of Orlando and Štefànik. The I/31° left Foligno on the 27th, destined to operate together with the scouts in the Nago-Torbole sector. The rest of the Division left Foligno on the 30th, deploying on the Berici Mountains within the XXII CA. The Division included 700/800 Italians, assigned to services and some batteries.

Italian Alpini? No, the Czechoslovak Legion. Placed under the political authority of the ČSNR, but controlled by the Italian Armed Forces. It was formed after the "Congress of Oppressed Nationalities" and the Italo-Czechoslovak Convention (April 1918). #WW1 #FWW #Czechoslovakia #Regioesercito

How to explain the disaster of the Italian Armed Forces in WW2? Economy, resources, weapons, morale, yes. But the organizational issues are worth exploring too. From 1927 to 1940, Comando Supremo was a dysfunctional organism by design. See for yourself. #Italy #Fascism #Regioesercito #WW2 1/4 🧵
