Meet Arron Watson, national Ecology Contact coordinator.
Arron has been the national EC coordinator since 2019, bringing together all EA regions. He supports volunteers with training days, runs Extended upskill sessions, and delves into the data.

🪰 Freshwater Friday - Flat-bodied stone-clingers (Heptageniidae)
Larvae in this family of mayflies have a flattened shape, which is perfect for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing streams.
If you spot them, it’s a good sign of a healthy river.

Nicky from @gwksouth.bsky.social spent a Saturday morning at Willowbank in #NewDenham with Malcolm and his #volunteer friends recently and was impressed by their #Riverfly monitoring skills and set up, thank you Roger @goldcrest10.bsky.social for the photos. @riverflies.bsky.social
Riverfly data in action! 💧
At Stadhampton Mill, a new bypass channel has reconnected 3.25 km of chalk stream habitat. Early RMI scores are strong (10s) & stoneflies are back - rare for the catchment! 🐟🌱

Lara said ‘I’ve never had such a great #riverfly session. The riverfly were emerging in the tray and flying away’. Look at this one on the hat. Any perch will do!
Dedicated volunteers who go out #Riverfly surveying on the Colne at #Staines Moor in all conditions. A great fun session also enjoyed by Lara Clements Rivers Offer @gwksouth.bsky.social

Today Wear Rivers Trust held a Riverfly Training session, on the River Gaunless! 💧
We spent the day in the sunshine learning how to monitor river health by identifying freshwater invertebrates such as mayfly, Caddisfly and Stoneflies! 🪳

Wildlife Wednesdays 🌿
Today’s focus: the stonefly! 🪰 From nymph to adult, stoneflies play a crucial role in our river ecosystems.💧Sensitive to pollution, they help us to monitor water quality and assess the impact of environmental changes within the Wear Catchment! 🔍 #riverfly #invertebrate #rivers

I post quite a lot about my local environment. I'm a #WaterGuardian with @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social , for whom I also monitor #Riverfly @riverflies.bsky.social . I also do CSI water sampling with Westcountry Rivers Trust. This is my local patch.

Our #Riverfly monitors have been busy in the last couple of months - a real variety of cased caddis at Hinderclay Fen. Thanks to all of them especially those that are wading in the cold water. Photos courtesy of Ellie Beach.
