The Roman Theatre at Augusta Emerita (Mérida, Spain) as it is may have looked when completed in 16/15 BC after its dedication by M. Agrippa (note the drop curtain is in the raised position), and how it looks today. #RomanSiteSaturday.

Harry has reached #Camulodunum — Britain’s first Roman colonia (cAD 49–50), built for retired soldiers and early provincial capital. Once a stronghold of the Trinovantes & Cunobelinus, it later became a symbol of Roman rule. Destroyed in the Boudican Revolt, then rebuilt. 🏛️

Sagalassos in southwestern Turkey was in Roman Imperial times the "first city of Pisidia", but it was already a major town in the Hellenistic period. It was abandoned after Arab raids threatened the town around 640 and after an earthquake destroyed it around 650. #RomanSiteSaturday

Shrine to the goddess #Minerva, Edgar's Field, #Chester. Second century (with modern surround), carved on a quarry wall; the only one to survive in situ in Britain. You can find it in Handbridge, just across the Old Dee Bridge from the city centre.

In the foreground copies of hypocaust pilae are stacked in rows, once under the floor of the bathhouse at Wroxeter. The originals were discovered when the site was excavated in 1859, but subsequently looted. In the background a large, substantial surviving section of the building wall stands tall. The bricks are all reddish in colour.

A #RomanSiteSaturday pic from an impromptu visit to Wroxeter or Viroconium Cornoviorum yesterday. Had to take the opportunity while I was so close as back to Cornwall later today where the Roman evidence is less obvious.

Known as the 'Temple of Mars' (although there is no evidence it was dedicated to that god), this Roman sanctuary at Corseul in Brittany was constructed in the first century and in use for two hundred years. Parts of its sacred cella still stand 10 metres tall. #RomanSiteSaturday

Camulodunum, the Roman Colchester in Essex, was an important castrum and city in Roman Britain. It was the first capital of the province. Originally it was the site of the Brythonic-Celtic oppidum of Camulodunon, capital of the Trinovantes and later the Catuvellauni tribes. #RomanSiteSaturday
