Interestingly, as soon as games use the Middle Ages directly, they are seen as "medievalist" games. Yet, when using such basic medieval themes such as "keys" and putting them at the centre (Mario, Doom, Adventure, ...), they are not seen as medievalist.

Maureen Quigley on "Virtual Passports: Keys and plays of authority in the later Middle Ages."
She has a rather unique view as a game design professor and an art historian.
Here, it's all about keys.

Conclusion:
- emphasize storytelling
- stereotyping accents hinders innovation and diversification
- nature and human settlements are quite polar opposities (not only sound-wise)
- sonic diversity and cultural specifics are limited or ignored

Voices... sounds uttered by humans.
Environmental sounds such as in #AgeOfEmpires are quite similar in that way. The sound of nature is always there, the sound of medieval work or the ringing of "the bell" is only there, when humans are there too.

Not only music, but voices and atmospheres (👀@felix_felixson).

@Mariana_J_Lopez argues that voices in games have different functions. Because of different genres and also because of what they need to convey (story, affirmation of commands, ...)
