A macro photograph is an orange-colored sand/gravel sample. There are fragments of barnacles and shells that are orange, as well as some white shell fragments and black basalt grains.
Iceland is often associated with black sand, but it’s not the only kind on the island. This sand/gravel sample from Rauðisandur Beach is comprised of barnacle and shell fragments, and basalt.

“Star sand” is more accurately a biogenic gravel: its grain size is too large to geologically be classified as sand. The sample typically consists of star-shaped Baclogypsina sphaerulata and other shaped forams whose genera I can’t recall at the moment. In the image you can easily see at least four or more different types of foraminifera along with shell and coral fragments.
