Today, we honor British Royal Navy Lieutenant Hamilton Douglas Halyburton, who was born on (Mon) October 10th, 1763. As the son of Sholto Charles Douglas, the 15th Earl of Morton, his family’s prestige and lineage allow him to be fast-tracked into the military. He found himself onboard the HMS Assistance, a 50-gun, Portland-Class fourth-rate warship during the American Revolution. Hamilton, at the ripe old age of 20, becomes a legend of the story of Sandy Hook and New Jersey as a whole during the Revolutionary War – under the most horrifying of circumstances. On Dec. 31st, 1783, as the Royal Navy prepares to leave New York Harbor for the last time, HMS Assistance found herself anchored in Sandy Hook Bay in present day Horseshoe Cove. Faced with the prospects of returning to England and continued service in the Royal Navy, several members of the crew dive over the side, swim ashore to the Hook, and take off running down the peninsula to hopeful freedom. HMS Assistance calmly lowers a boat with 14 men, with young Hamilton in command. They're to row ashore, catch the deserters, bring them back to the ship, hang them, and then sail for home.
Between ship and shore, a massive snow storm blew in and enveloped the British sailors, and they vanished in the white out conditions. The storm rages for 2 days. A second search party finds Lt. Halyburton and his men… frozen to death in the marshes. HMS Assistance’s crew buried her fallen in a mass grave and sailed for home. Lt. Halyburton’s mother paid for an ornate monument of white marble to be built at the grave. It was smashed by French sailors in the early 1800's and the gravesite lost to history. It would not be until 1908 that the burial crypt was discovered by accident. Lt. Halyburton and his men were recovered, and, with the blessings of the British government, interred at Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY, where they rest to this day. A monument, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, marking the relative location of the crypt, stands watch overlooking Sandy Hook Bay to this day, and the memory of the lost British sailors shall never be lost again. Their tragic stoey is an indelible chapter of the incredible and rich history of Sandy Hook, Monmouth County, and New Jersey. Enemies no longer, their legacy is in good and safe hands, both here, and on the shores of Sandy Hook Bay.
Little known incident on Sandy Hook, NJ:
British Royal Navy Lieutenant Hamilton D. Halyburton, and several other crewmen of HMS Assistance, met a horrifying and gruesome end when they froze to death in our salt marsh here on December 30-31, 1783.
