Climate change may alter seed and seedling traits and shift germination and mortality patterns in alpine environments AbstractBackground and Aims. The early life-history stages of alpine plants are strongly influenced by climatic factors. Predicted changes in alpine climat

🌍 Alpine ecosystems are already climate-sensitive. If early life stages are compromised, long-term persistence of alpine species could be at risk.
Climate change doesn’t just affect adult plants, it reshapes the next generation. (9/9)

Our recent study uncovers epicotyl physiological dormancy in Quercus sagrana, the only Caribbean oak and a vulnerable endemic from western Cuba. Its desiccation-sensitive acorns germinate fast but delay shoot emergence, aiding seedling survival in dry tropics.

Beautiful photos showing the microscopic details of #seeds at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Actual seeds mounted in acrylic next to the photos is a particularly nice touch.

Exhibit is on in #Canberra until 16 Nov. Free.

Our latest study confirms that Martynia annua (an invasive species) produces physiologically dormant seeds; its woody endocarp does not prevent water uptake, but delays germination, and seeds remain viable for over a year, fueling their invasive potential.

X-ray imaging of Acacia caerulescens seed. Healthy undamaged seed appears as pale white roughly circular object on a black background with a small protruding elaiosome at the top. The seed on the left is damaged and shows a small faint shape of a small wasp inside the seed.

Is it a seed or a shadow? No, it's a mystery phytophagous wasp. Someone suggested it's Bruchophagus but we've not tried the keys yet so we'll see but any suggestions are most welcome. #SeedEcology #SeedPredation #entemology #ecology

Here, we discussed 'interpopulation variations in seed germination, suggesting plants may have microclimate-based regeneration strategies, highlighting the need to consider these variations in seed traits for effective restoration.
