Silver bullet The Silvertown Tunnel is finally open for business. One question remains: what’s it for?

Back in the spring, London's new Silvertown Tunnel opened to traffic, and we went to take a look. Why did the Mayor build a tunnel that seemingly nobody wants? #silvertown www.roads.org.uk/blog/silver-...

Graph showing the number of folk taking bikes on the silvertown tunnel bike bus over the first 3 months

8/ After an initial week of folk trying out the #Silvertown bike bus, the usage has settled down into a stable 120-or-so per day. It's rare for anyone to be left behind.

The bike bus is free for the first year, and contracted for three years.

Cross-river cycle shuttle
Before the Silvertown Tunnel
opened, there were limited options
for people wanting to cross the
river with a cycle in this part of
London. The London Cable Car
is the closest available link, while
the Greenwich and Woolwich Foot
Tunnels and London River Services
are also available.
The new Silvertown Tunnel cycle
shuttle, which is free for at least
the first 12 months, runs from 06.30
until 21:30 every day, apart from
Christmas Day. It can accommodate
a range of cycles, including
conventional pedal bikes, e-bikes,
cargo bikes, hire bikes and adaptive
cycles, with conventional cycles
making up almost 80 per cent of
all trips.
The average daily demand is
between 125 and 130 cyclists.
While this is below the capacity
of the service, usage is expected
to grow as cyclists plan and adapt
their routes to benefit from this
innovative and free crossing option.
To encourage more Londoners
to try the shuttle service, we will
continue to advertise it through
the summer. This includes
collaborations with microinfluencers to promote the service,
as well as additional roadside
posters in the local area.

#TfL wants "influencers" to promote it with tiktok vids 🤦

Cycle Shuttle
In addition to the regular bus services, on 7
April, we launched a new dedicated service
that enables cyclists to take their cycles on
a shuttle bus through Silvertown Tunnel.
This is a first-of-its-kind service in London,
and is free to use for at least 12 months.
We will be closely reviewing demand and
taking on board customer and stakeholder
feedback to ensure it supports all
customers. We have had positive feedback
since it launched and are currently seeing
100-150 passengers using the service on a
typical day. This is below the capacity of
the service and so we are looking at ways to
promote it to Londoners.

This can't be cycling infrastructure relating to the #Silvertown eight-bikes-at-a-time cycle bus, can it?

All this mind confusing paint has to be an art installation, maybe an entry for the Turner Prize?

Amazing that building more road capacity hasn't done anything to ease East London traffic, even though all the available data clearly shows this was exactly what would happen.

Below, on the left, a young person wearing a navy cap and yellow shirt stands beside a model that appears to depict a tunnel, constructed from wood and featuring vivid cut-outs of vehicles and people. On the right, there are two distinct photographs: one shows two individuals smiling on a train, while the other depicts several people on a platform, waiting by a red train under a modern, arched canopy. The bottom section contains text summarising ideas from workshops hosted by Sian Berry AM.
