Physonect #siphonophores like Nanomia bijuga produce multiple jets for propulsion, employing distinct swimming behaviors such as pulsating in sequence and simultaneous pulsation. In this paper, we used experiments and modeling to compare swimming modes. (Jan 2023) doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

Forskalia are unique among #siphonophores for their feeding bodies hanging on long stalks and the spiral arrangement of all their zooids, including the swimming bells, which might explain why they often swim in a twisting motion #multijetpropulsion (March 2022)

A speculative illustration of the giant siphonophore, Praya dubia. It shows the same image as above in the previous post of a mostly transparent animal rendered in light blue for the transparent portions with multiple yellow tentacles dangling like a beaded curtain undulating on a black background, but this time, the image is about 3 times as long as the previous to show off the full-length of the colonial animal. The animal is rendered with the head and some of its length brighter to convey that only some of its length is illuminated by an underwater light.

Another tidbit, this is the full length. Supposedly these #siphonophores get to 40 ft long so the actual #illustration was printed to span a 40 foot length across the exhibit gallery. It was also the reason it was an illustration. None of the deep sea photos could be blown up to that resolution.

Floating in front of a backdrop of dark water and marine snow is a large orange colonial siphonophore with thousands of fine tentacles coming off its main body to catch prey.

This series of shots on a galaxy siphonophore just takes my breath away ๐Ÿ˜ The orange part of the body is the siphosome. Thousands of tentacles coming off of it like a curtain of death. #Siphonophores #AntarcticClimateConnections #MarineLife #SouthernOcean @schmidtocean.bsky.social
