I'm loving this more than expected: The Six And Seven-Eight String Band Of New Orleans. Found at a thrift or the flea market but the amazing thing beyond the fact that this 1956 LP was not played much if at all is that the music is jolly fun! My partner would call this Sponge Bob Squarepants music: guitars, mandolin, acoustic lap slide/slack guitar and stand up bass. Early jazz flavors and nice soloing throughout... Effectively this was a local New Orleans band who only issue two private release records in 1949. Apparently these folks were popular here between 1910 and 1925 but didn't get to release a full album until this one, which is basically a private home session that was never intended for release. Feels like you are sitting in a living room with a bunch of friends playing music they love, really well! Includes the booklet which I've yet to read fully but no doubt will. For now I'm just enjoying the fun.

On Some Faraway Beach - Well, this is much more interesting than expected and kind of a perfect escape from my day. Recent flea market find, I thought it was going to be faux exotica made by white Hollywood folk. Instead, its an actual descendant of a family of Tahitian aristocratic chiefs (according to the Wiki) who was acting and singing for said Hollywood folk.Now playing: Polynesia! I would have been playing this bargyn bin find today regardless but it turned out perfect as there is jackhammer construction going on across the street so this is very soothing as I try to work from my living room instead of my bedroom office. Don't turn your nose to these later Roy Smeck albums....Save for Les Paul he is perhaps the only musician who can take a schmaltzy easy listening arrangement of period pop tunes and make it compelling and interesting with his playing. In this case, its mostly lap (and perhaps pedal) steel slide / slack key guitar sounds. Lovely.
