Mars-Like Worlds Near M-Dwarfs May Lose Air in Millions of Years The criteria for finding an Earth-like planet unofficially comes down to two things: water and the habitable zone. But a phenomenon known as atmospheric escape often “escapes” the minds of many astronomy fans, and it turns out that atmospheric escape is one of the key characteristics for finding an Earth-like world. Although extensive research has been conducted on how the planet Mars might have lost its atmosphere, and potentially the ability to sustain life, how would the atmosphere enveloping a Mars-like exoplanet respond to stars different from our own?

Direct confirmation of two baby planets forming around a young, sun-like star As the number of exoplanet detections has breached 6,000 and continues to grow, scientists are finding a wide variety of different solar system architectures. Critical to understanding how these architectures take shape is finding young planets forming around very young stars. In 2025, a team of astronomers announced the discovery of a planet about five times more massive than Jupiter around a star that's very much a younger version of our sun.

From source in toot: Two observations of Saturn are split diagonally, with Webb’s infrared observations at bottom left and Hubble’s visible at top right. In infrared, Saturn has horizontal bands, with bands northern bands and bands toward the south poles appearing darker orange and lightening to tan as they approach the equator. The south pole glows a greenish-grey. In visible, Saturn’s horizontal bands appear pale yellow, with some bands towards the north pole having a light blue hue. In both, the rings are bright white, glowing slightly less in the Hubble image.

Been working on a dataset to add some detail to the rings of Saturn in the form of particles. I'm quite happy with the result, especially the performance. The video shows 1.5 million rock/dust particles. Transitions to/from the ring model are quite seamless.

AI approach uncovers dozens of hidden planets in NASA's TESS data Astronomers at the University of Warwick have validated over 100 exoplanets, including 31 newly detected planets, using a new artificial intelligence tool applied to data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a space mission that monitors the sky for the subtle dimming of starlight caused when planets pass in front of their host stars.

NASA Releases High-Resolution Images Revealing Detailed Views of Solar System Planets NASA has shared a stunning collection of high-resolution images that provide some of the clearest and most detailed views yet of the planets in our solar system. What were once seen as mere distant points of light in the night sky are now revealed in extraordinary clarity, showcasing the unique characteristics of each world. The imagery highlights the planets in their natural order from the Sun outward. Mercury appears as a small, cratered, airless world resembling our Moon, with extreme temperature swings and evidence of a violent past marked by impact basins and lava plains. Venus, similar in size to Earth, is shrouded in thick clouds of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, creating a runaway greenhouse effect that makes it the hottest planet in the system. Earth stands out as the only known planet supporting life, with vast oceans and a balanced atmosphere. Mars is depicted as a cold, red desert world covered in iron-rich dust, featuring massive geological formations like Olympus Mons and Valles Marineris. Jupiter, the largest planet, displays its colorful atmospheric bands and the persistent Great Red Spot, a massive storm system. Saturn captivates with its iconic rings composed of billions of icy particles, surrounding a gas giant with powerful winds and numerous moons. Uranus, an icy blue giant, is uniquely tilted on its side—likely from an ancient collision—resulting in extreme seasons lasting decades. Neptune, the farthest major planet, shows deep-blue hues and the fastest winds in the solar system, along with powerful storms. Even Pluto, reclassified as a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, reveals fascinating icy mountains, nitrogen glaciers, and the prominent heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio. These images, credited to NASA, underscore the beauty and complexity of our cosmic neighborhood, reminding us of the dynamic and diverse worlds that make up our solar system. The release emphasizes advancements in space imaging technology that allow for such vivid portrayals, inspiring awe and further scientific interest in planetary exploration.

Moons orbiting wandering exoplanets could be habitable—with one catch Provided they host thick, hydrogen-dominated atmospheres, moons orbiting free-floating exoplanets could retain much of the heat generated deep within their interiors by tidal forces. Led by David Dahlbüdding at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and Giulia Roccetti at the European Space Agency, a new study predicts that hydrogen could act as a potent greenhouse gas—potentially providing habitable conditions for billions of years after their host planets are first ejected from their stellar systems. The work has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

What 'Project Hail Mary' gets right—and wrong—about astrophysics "Project Hail Mary," the Ryan Gosling-led adaptation of the best-selling sci-fi novel from Andy Weir, is being praised for putting the science in science fiction. Although aliens, sun-draining microorganisms and galaxy-spanning spaceflight are all a part of the story of a scientist sent on a suicide mission to save Earth, the film and its source material are not afraid to delve into the kind of astrophysics that would make most people's heads spin.
