It's spiny lobster season in SoCal. Diving for lobsters following the rules~seeing the reefs ~ you can see for yourself how important the oceans are to survival. It makes me appreciate the meal even more with the work of catching and preparing the meal. Blue tones - beautiful creature. #spinylobster

This stunning macro image shows a close-up, head-on view of a spiny lobster, brilliantly illuminated to reveal its vibrant and surreal coloration. The lobster’s face and upper body display a mesmerizing array of colors—electric blues, neon oranges, deep purples, and vivid yellows—resembling a work of abstract art. Prominent are its eye stalks, which appear like glossy, bulbous marbles with a gradient of dark hues. Surrounding the eyes and head are sharp, flame-like spines tipped in bright orange, giving it a fierce and exotic appearance. The creature’s armored exoskeleton is detailed with fine textures and intricate speckles, contributing to its otherworldly aesthetic. Photo Credit: ©Gregory Rothman 2022

One of the most brilliantly colored spiny lobsters I’ve seen shot head-on. Once you see the eyes it might make sense. :)

A close-up underwater scene showing a group of bright red soldierfish and several spiny lobsters nestled under a rocky reef overhang. The lobsters are mostly hidden beneath the ledge, with their long antennae extending outward. Some of the soldierfish are swimming upside down, a behavior typical when resting under ledges. The reef is colorful with patches of orange and yellow sponges and encrusting life, creating a textured and vibrant backdrop.

A cozy little corner of the reef—shared by a bunch of soldierfish and several spiny lobsters tucked into the crevice below.
If you look closely, you’ll notice something quirky: a few of the soldierfish are swimming upside down.
