We're looking down at the surface of the lake from the edge of the nearby highway. It's autumn, so the water level is low, and round-ish "spots", lower places on the lakebed, are separated by areas of white salts. Reflected in the water is gold and orange autumn foliage from the hills around the lake. It's a saline or alkali lake of the type that forms in a basin where water can flow in but not out; over centuries salts accumulate (Mg, Ca, Na, Ti, Ag).

This image captured from high on Mount Kobau, in southern British Columbia, is of a sacred place "Spotted Lake" , known as Lake Khiluk in the Nsyilcan language. This well known saline endorheic alkali lake contains mineral deposits that appear as spots on the lake. Minerals I the water become more concentrated as the lake water evaporates with summer heat and display colourful spots on the lake. This image shows the lake surrounded by golden grasslands, accented by coniferous trees that are set against a backdrop of rocky hills and a peek-a-boo view of the town of Osoyoos, BC far down below.

How gorgeous. “During summer when the water of the lake evaporates, the mineral deposits remain behind in the form of colored spots on the lake bed. The mud & waters of the lake are used for therapeutic healing by the natives of the region.” #Okanagan #BritishColumbia #SpottedLake
