#StormÉowyn is on her way. This feisty lass sounds a bit to dangerous for any wave watching but here is a throwback to #StormKathleen in April 2024 as a towering wave crashes against the pier at Gyles Quay, Ireland capturing the raw power of nature.

The rain has been relentless this past week. That's our main car park under water. Feel sorry for the tourists in caravans and tents here. #stormkathleen #raindrops
Tide in at West Kirby beach, with the RNLI beach patrol flags, choppy waves, crashing onto the prom and Hilbre Island, hazy in the background.
Still an hour until high tide and it's already getting a bit insane down here. 🌬️🌊💙

At High Fen, a Kestrel spent y'day afternoon playing partridge, hunting on the track, perhaps to shelter from #StormKathleen. Cowslips in bloom by river. Daffodils in bloom on Fen; reminder of its arable past. Exciting to see how this wildland will evolve under Nattergal. 13/13
Here's Nattergal High Fen Wildland ditch that flows to the Cut-off Channel, reeds blasted by #StormKathleen. Water visibility was pants unlike the ditches to the south of the site. A lovely, energising swim nonetheless with little underwater life to distract from the rhythm. 2/13
Renewable generation last week was equivalent to 42.8% of electricity demand. Owing to strong winds from #StormKathleen, this figure rose to 72.1% Friday through Sunday.
Solar was strongest Tuesday: it was meeting over 6% of electricity demand at its peak, around 11am.

#StormKathleen may have passed but the energy it has imparted to the Atlantic waters in #GalwayBay still much in evidence at Trá na gCeann (Silverstrand; on the #WildAtlanticWay), Bearna at high tide about 5pm

Left of the picture is the storm.
Right of the picture is the calm.
The sea was just a mess crashing to the shore.

Sunset at West Kirby beach, with Hilbre Island and Red Rock on the horizon.
The wind is still a bit crazy, but this evening has turned out quite lovely. 🌤️💙😍

#StormKathleen is at her peak. Wild video of the Baleshare causeway earlier this morning on FB. We ned to time any emergencies. 🙀 #Uist
Looking on from a hillside. In the fenced boundary two deck chairs and a goal sit in the water brought in by the he tidal storm surge partially flooded field. To the left a tennis court. A hedge separates the court & field from a path where a bench is next to coloured chin up frame.
All Sports.

Whilst #StormKathleen took down trees all over the place, we planted 150 at #salopobs today, to a constant backdrop of passing Swallows and the first Wheatear of the year 🌱
A screenshot of a Yellow Warning from the Met Office, showing Storm Kathleen battering the West coast of England (does England have a “West Coast”?), Wales and southern Scotland, and the whole of Northern Ireland.

As well as exploring disruption in research, we've had a few disruptions ourselves: #StormKathleen, cancelled flights, a major power outage and subsequent evacuation of the venue, no available conference rooms in nearby hotels...

Set out to snorkel Methwold Lode but visibility so bad, swum under a fence into ditch at Nattergal High Fen (thanks for permission!). In contrast to murky Lode & #StormKathleen blown fen, stunning clear, tranquil world, draped like aquatic version of Miss Havisham's house.

[Wikipedia has some inaccuracies]
Kathleen Rita McNulty (later Antonelli, Mauchly) was born on February 12th, 1921 to James McNulty and Anne Nelis of Feymore, Dunfanaghy, Donegal.
"Sometimes, when it’s storming and the Atlantic is so rough that the sea spray hits the windows – I do spend the whole day in bed. Then I read and listen to the radio, and I drink tea and eat cheese on toast."
