I was in Kolonaki yesterday and the sun was shining, casting shadows everywhere. Here’s the open door of a mid century apartment building, metal with square glass windows crossed by a large grid of bars. The light shines through the closed half of the door, and I took the picture through the open half, the white marble entrance edged with black marble, the stairs, the shadow of the square glass windows and bars.

A photograph of an old wooden double door, painted black, with inset windows in vertical strips on either side. These are protected by early 20th Century ironwork, a pretty pattern of squiggly parallel lines and ornamental spirals, painted white. Outside these doors a second set of metal security doors, also painted white, also ornamental. Each panel has a partial disc in the upper outer corner, either lines radiating out like a stylised sun, towards the central seam where the two doors meet. These different layers or ironwork interact pleasingly.

Colour photo: a tailor’s dummy on a stand in an abandoned clothing store. Graffiti tag scrawled on the plate glass, apartment buildings and cars reflecting in it. This is on Fokionos Negri, the main semi-pedestrian thoroughfare of Kypseli, a neighbourhood originally built with more impulses towards urban planning than most of Athens - first it was the height of elegance, then shabby genteel, then neglected, and now it’s gentrifying rapidly.

In the Philoppapuu neighbourhood. On the left, a one storey neoclassical house in some ruin, with a gate to the side, and on the right part of a three or four storey apartment building. The older house is a faded sienna yellow with grey wooden shutters and a terracotta tile roof, graffiti under the one window. The wrought iron get has been supplemented with a steel grille above. Just above the roof, the top fronds of a palm tree. The newer building is concrete painted white, with balconies the length of the facade, bright with bougainvillea and lavender flowers. A tree in the depths of the alley between.
