Screen shot of text: Travel patterns show Canadians are choosing different paths The decline in cross-border travel isn’t small. In January 2026, only 2.1 million Canadians returned from trips to the United States, down from 2.7 million the year before. Car trips fell even harder, dropping 26.3% to 1.3 million crossings. Air travel decreased 12.8% to about 753,000 trips. For the first time in modern history, more Canadians returned by automobile from overseas destinations than from the United States. This represents a fundamental change in how Canadians choose to spend their travel dollars and vacation time.
