Unprecedented record in Chile: three fin whales feed synchronously in the Humboldt Archipelago In November 2025, a team of researchers captured for the first time the synchronized feeding of three fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in the waters of the Humboldt Archipelago (Chile), using cameras installed on the backs of the animals themselves. The footage shows how the cetaceans inflate their ventral grooves as they take large gulps of krill-laden water, offering an unprecedented perspective on the behavior of this species. Importance of the finding This event confirms the high productivity of the marine ecosystem in the area of the Humboldt Archipelago and the submarine canyon of Isla Chañaral. Scientists emphasize that this type of record reinforces the need to protect an area considered one of the 35 biodiversity hotspots on the planet, home to more than 400 species of algae, fish, birds, and marine mammals. The fin whale: giant of the ocean The fin whale is the second largest animal in the world, after the blue whale. In Chile, it plays a vital ecological role: Ocean fertilization: its feces provide iron and nitrogen, stimulating phytoplankton growth. Carbon capture: acts as a natural sink, helping to mitigate climate change. Productivity indicator: its feeding in coastal upwelling areas reflects the biological richness of the Humboldt...

A brown bird with a pale eyebrow, white spots from feather tips dotting its back, and pale underparts speckled in brown stands in profile facing left gripping a branching tree limb in its bright yellow talons. The morning sunlight shines on its intently staring face highlighting its short sharply hooked beak and glinting off its deep yellow eye.

The same bird is now on another branch among a tangle of smaller branches with its back to the camera, feathers puffed slightly showing off those white tips down its back against a pale blue sky. Its head is turned to the left slightly back over its shoulder and it is in better light showing off its pretty face.

This young hawk has been visiting occasionally this winter which I have been happy to see even if the other birds have not.

A Canada Goose, one of thousands, heads north on a beautiful late March afternoon. (I particularly like this image in that our goose is in a classic flight posture, is in focus, has adequate ambient lighting from underneath while receiving bright but not blown out sunlight from a complementary angle above, and a fresh blue sky background. You may say well “da” but to get all these elements aligned is not an everyday occurrence, even with thousands of geese about.

Two deer in the woods. think that they're twins .
They look exactly alike, and are always together.

'Paul Manship’s large figural groups are idealized and refer to mythic characters and stories. The artist used the same stylization in his animal sculptures as in his figural groups, but to different effect. In an intimate scale, this stylization accentuates the decorative quality of each animal. By exaggerating certain features or expressions, Manship also lets a little bit of their personalities peek through. This is especially visible in his gilded works, where the gold patina highlights the contours of the animal’s forms and their precise surface details. Many of Manship’s animal sculptures were originally created as part of his design for the gates of New York’s Bronx Zoo.'

Patience is a virtue! 🪶 Watching this Snowy Egret display its incredible plumes while carefully hunting in the marsh. Even though it didn't land a catch this time, the focus and technique are fascinating to watch. Nature’s quiet persistence! ✨

A small bird with a blue-grey back and a rich rusty-orange belly stands alert on top of a large, brown pinecone nestled in tall green grass. Its head features a sharp black cap and a prominent white stripe through the eye, with its thin, dark beak pointed slightly toward the left. The scene is brightly lit, showcasing the contrast between the bird's colorful feathers and the vibrant green blades of grass and low-growing foliage.
