🌲 Stopping #Forest disease before it spreads
Dr. Richard Hamelin explains how early action helped prevent #SuddenOakDeath in BC. Using genomic tools, CFIA identified the pathogen quickly, enabling faster testing and response to protect forest health.

Just reading in the in-depth/informative #BBCGardenersWorld magazine (thanks for the hand-me-down Jennifer! 😁) that they are using dogs to identify the fungus that causes #SuddenOakDeath! Incredible!

Six-year results of a native forest restoration project in a grove of old-growth coast live oaks showing the efficacy of emulating fire to improve the health and longevity of fire-adapted trees. #oakhealth #firemimicry #suddenoakdeath 🌎🌐🌲🔥
A new tool for the conservation and preservation of a major carbon sink - our old-growth oak forests. Surgery! Many oaks are diseased with stem canker infections that can be successfully removed, cauterized, and poulticed. #suddenoakdeath #firemimicry #conservation 🌎🌐🌲
Stem canker surgery and recovery after 6 years of fire mimicry treatments on a coast live oak.
Canopy of a coast live oak before and six years after a stem canker surgery.
Surgical intervention can successfully remove stem canker infections (e.g. #suddenoakdeath) from oak trees! I removed a bleeding stem canker with cutting tools, cauterized the wound, and applied a limewash poultice. 6 yrs later the wound has largely healed with no trace of infection! #oaks 🌎🌐🌲
Here is an ancient oak in Big Sur dating from a time when the Esselen People were the sole human occupants of this land. It got infected with Sudden Oak Death disease several years ago. Here is my attempt to address this pathogen using a "fire mimicry" protocol. #suddenoakdeath #firemimicry #TEK 🌎🌐🌲

Big Sur is home to many remarkable trees, including ancient groves of oddly shaped oaks and peculiar groupings and strange fire scars in old-growth redwoods, all dating from a time when the Esselen People were the sole human occupants of the land. #bigtrees #firemimicry #suddenoakdeath
#Umbellulariacalifornica is a host of #Phytophthora #ramorum, the #pathogen that causes the disease #suddenoakdeath. It is important in this sense because it is one of two tree species (#tanoak is the other) on which the pathogen readily produces #spores.
Looks like the EU1 clonal lineage of #SuddenOakDeath pathogen #Phytophthora #ramorum is becoming the dominant lineage in the Pacific North West https://doi.org/10.1094/PDIS-11-17-1730-FE Great work by @SFSHAMOUN @GuillaumeBilod2 @richamelin
