I think gardening is one of the most fascinating of languages. It's full of wonderfully lively, descriptive, and curious words. How many "technical" gardening words do you know?

Okay, so maybe you've shut down your garden(s) for the year. Now you're thinking: "What will I grow next year and where will I get the seed?" I got ya covered.
open.substack.com/pub/joeseals...
I watered a few times to germinate the seed and then a few deep soakings thereafter. I stopped watering altogether in June. It made it through a very hot, very dry summer and into fall. Parts of it struggled but after a handful of rains, it looks like this. The red circle indicates the one tiny spot thatโs still a bit bare. This is after a mowing today (yeah, needs a trimming/edging). Overall, itโs a bit โlumpyโ but since Iโm not playing bocce ball nor practicing putting, Iโd say itโs level enough for now. Looks kinda like a shag carpet from the 70s. I use a battery-powered mower with a mulching mode. I shall not water it nor fertilize it in the future. My 14-year-old dog needs a place to go out to at night.

I sowed a small lawn for my small dog in March. It was sown with a mix of seven native species of grasses, clovers, and a sedge. No amendments, no fertilizing, nothing special. More info in "ALT Text."

I'd like to try a poll/survey. Now that the season is coming to a close, I'm interested in what varieties (by name) of DAHLIAS you think were the best as cut flowers (in the vase).

A few more plants that need a good spot in the garden. Replacing a Hibiscus killed by -30C cold snap, Coreopsis, Heliopsis, Agastache. Elsewhere and growing well, Geranium 'Rozanne' blooms forever. Limelight hydrangea. Oenothera missouriensis keeps pumping out the flowers.

Mutant semi-double Hollyhock when you ordered single-flower seeds. Gaillardia. State of Phlox. (You've been here before. Pink and white created a lavender hybrid.) Hydrangea. Not to be confused with the much shorter H. serrata or Lowdrangea.

I love perennial -- yes, perennial -- sunflowers. And there are many species, hybrids, and cultivars; probably at least one for every garden in the U.S., Canada, or the U.K.

Japanese Anemone, Dalmation Foxglove, Rudbeckia hirta, and R. fulgida. Garden getting hammered by sun and heat but still plenty of flowers. R. hirta was in full bloom a month ago. Now some flowers are fading. R. fulgida just coming into bloom and we have 3 large patches.

Lilium 'Dizzy', orange Asclepias tuberosa (milkweed) vs yellow, and A. incarnata. Swallowtail butterflies but no Monarchs. Lots of native milkweed down by the lake but we're way up in the hills in Ponderosa forest. Maybe if I add some Showy milkweed next year.

Robin nesting on a turf rake. Hydrangea paniculata. Sanguisorba obtusa. (Next year, I'll use a tomato cage instead of bamboo.) Room with a view and Yucca filamentosa.

Delphiniums and geraniums cut back to ground level for increased airflow and second wave of flowers late summer. Already about 1 ft tall. And the Mother of All Rhubarb is starting over. One geranium was about 4 ft wide x 3 feet tall. We've had some huge flowers this year.

Salvia forskaehlei, native to Bulgaria and Tรผrkiye, has one of the most intricate colorings of any salvia I've seen. It glows in shade but looks more washed out in sun. The basal rosette is deciduous in winter and quite drought tolerant in a #summerdry garden. ๐ฑ #gardening

First hollyhocks -- Alcea rosea--Indian Spring mixed colors. And fornicating hollyhock weevils. If not caught and squished between thumb and finger, the female bores into the seed pod and lays her eggs. I cut off each seed pod when its done flowering. No more weevils.
