I just sat through 4 forever-taking episodes of #TheMonsterofFlorence... 4 eps of rape (not shown), SA, and just pure female-hate. Based off of a book, based off of the case of an actual serial killer... And the killer is not found.

There are 4 episodes, each mostly focused on one suspect. Considering the time period and rampant sexism, the characterization of the men feels pretty accurate. Of the suspects that are the focus (because they never placed who the criminal was), my money would be on the brother-in-law Giovanni. Everything about him ticks all the boxes of an insecure, insignificant man that takes his rage out in specific, violent ways and he clearly has a disdain for women. While the rest of the suspects fit the profile to an extent, their toxic masculinity does not stick out for the time period. If there was a theme it would be "men benefitting from the violence of other men." The husband sure as shit does. While this series shows the violence of the men also go through in their life, it doesn't shy away from how women are often on the receiving end. It also doesn't try to overly humanize or rationalize the actions of the suspects.
#themonsterofflorence ended up being better than I expected. Each suspect is an unreliable narrator in some regard. While each suspect has some aspects that could make them the killer in question, I think the brother-in-law Giovanni is the most likely culprit of those shown. #truecrime #moviereview
