This Latin quote, "SEMPER EGET SITIENS MEDIIS CEU TANTALUS VNDIS / INTER ANHELATAS SEMPER AVARUS OPES," describes the insatiable greed of the avaricious man, comparing him to Tantalus in the underworld: "Ever needy, thirsting, like Tantalus in the midst of waters, ever greedy amidst panting riches, he ever needs.". It highlights that the greedy person, despite having wealth (riches), is perpetually unsatisfied, just as Tantalus could never reach the water or fruit.

Sharing some delights from my trip to the Morgan Library & Museum, Renoir Exhibition:
The exhibit highlighted Renoir drawings/sketches. I was shocked by the large scale of the actual painting.

Visited the fabulous Morgan Library today in NY! Cannot recommend it enough. They have an astounding collection of books and art from all over the world acquired by Morgan and his librarian Belle Greene.

It was glorious to be able to spend the afternoon at the #BronteParsonageMuseum.
Special joys were seeing #CharlotteBronte’s “Thackeray Dress” in person again (the last time I saw it was at #TheMorganLibrary ten years ago), and to see Branwell’s portrait of #EmilyBronte back home at the Parsonage.
If you really love books & you go to #NYC be absolutely dure to visit #TheMorganLibrary okay? Their collection will blow your mind & leave you just a mumbling shred of the self you were at entry
#JaneAusten passed away #otd in 1817.
In this July 20, 1817, letter featured in the Jane #Austen250 exhibit at #TheMorganLibrary, Jane’s sister Cassandra writes to Fanny Knight, “I have lost a treasure, such a Sister, such a friend as never can have been surpassed, — She was the sun of my life…”
#ArrestingBeauty at #TheMorganLibrary takes visitors into the mystical world of #19thcentury photographer #JuliaMargaretCameron.
If you are unfamiliar with her, I recommend that rabbit hole.

3. “The Annunciation,” 1865-66
A flying trip to #NewYork to see the “A Lively Mind: #JaneAusten at 250” exhibit at #TheMorganLibrary.
It was poignant to see the originals of so many #letters I quote from so frequently.
Many thanks to #JulietteWells and everyone whose work went into creating this intimate and impactful exhibit!

Jane Austen is coming to the #TheMorganLibrary!
(remember when oligarchs at least built libraries & museums instead of defunding them... )

Hats off to Bella de Costa Greene, Morgan’s personal librarian who acquired & curated many of these items. A woman with a great deal of power in a time dominated by men.
Thanks to #HistoricHudson for this wonderful opportunity to visit #TheMorganLibrary & for the lovely dinner at Union League Club

Happy birthday, Claude Debussy! Along with Maurice Ravel, he was one of the most prominent figures associated with Impressionist music, though he himself disliked the term when applied to his compositions.
