They were coming for her. Like they did in Los Angeles. Like they did when she hid with her parents in San Bernardino. And when she hid with her best friend Annie in Barstow. And now here she was in Bellamy, with Annie’s broken down car on the highway probably letting them know exactly where she was. She knew this meant she had to keep trying. Forcing her way into every home to look for a phone or a place where the electricity still worked to charge her smartphone however briefly. Door after door thankfully too old to resist, maybe long left open by ignorance or some other reason. But time after time, the ancient site seemed to mock her chances. Light switches refusing to spark to life. Landlines jesting with silent signals. Struggle leading to greater exhaustion, greater frustration more and more. Nothing flowed through this suburban harbor. And as the light quickly faded from view, not even the errant street lights seemed to want to come alive. And within the hour, the sky quickly fell darker still. By the time she had finished searching, all Emily could do was slump down onto the still burning sidewalk pavement. Too tired to cry and too tired to run. She knew they were coming. She didn’t know how soon, but she reasoned there was no other choice now but to wait for them. So she put her bags at her feet, curled her knees up to her chest and stared at the dead phone in her hands. Soaking in the cold night air that gently blew through the little cul-de-sac she resigned herself to as it coaxed the heat out of her sun cooked skin. Her eyes went wide at the sudden tremors in her hands. Slowly, cautiously turning the phone over, her heart dropped at the sight of her dead phone that had come to life. No battery charge. No signal. Just a single message on her suddenly live phone, from someone calling themselves “Envoy”. “Unlock your phone,” Emily read to herself, shivering as the night air seemed to suddenly grow colder. “We need to talk?”
People keep saying "you can't have smartphones in modern horror, because they ruin the suspense".
Uh, yes. Yes you can.
For example, the Japanese Horror movie "Pulse" is literally about ghosts using cell phones to haunt people.
And in #TheRanger, ghosts can use dead tech to contact the living.

I mean, I turned ya because it's funny seeing a preacher's boy struggle with God's disdain.” Emory could only feel a chill running down her spine as the vampire’s eyes turned towards her. Slowly, like a predator sizing up prey. Deciding how much of a fight the morsel was worth so soon before the coming dawn. “But I also turned ya because nothing moral lasts. Nothing mortal lasts. Best to let it go before it kills us, too."
When you face a Vampire who went full doomer to embrace his existence, you know you have an uphill battle. Especially when it's the sire of the gunman who was sent to protect you from him.
