Per mindat.org, Thortveitite was "Named in 1911 by Jakob Grubbe Cock Schetelig in honour of Gunder Olaus Olsen Thortveit, a feldspar and mineral exporter from Iveland, Norway.

Last minute push for #thortveitite, re-written in English BY POPULAR DEMAND (hi @elysiamacht.bsky.social 👋): The scandium- and yttrium-bearing mineral was first described in Norway in 1911, from a sample sent in by Olaus Thortveit from the Tortveit farm in Iveland, Setesdal.

I just learned that while Thortveit died only 44 years old from tuberculosis, the actual first guy to find #thortveitite (geologist Per Schei, in 1903, mis-identified the sample as epidote) died only 30 years old of kidney disease! COINCIDENCE?

This thread needs to be in English/just check the translations, bc I don't think I've seen mentions of #Thortveitite as the most expensive mineral yet, nor the photos elsewhere.
If my glancing through this post holds without a further check for accuracy. Probably that in the '50s more so/only.

I was split completely between #Titanite & #Thortveitite until I learned that thortveitite (which I will keep writing until I spell it by memory) comes from a place called Rumpetrollsynken (literally “Tadpole shaft”) and it’s on a Norwegian stamp! Of such things it seems are my #MinCup25 votes made.
