The tombs are wedge-shaped in ground plan, with the widest part facing south west towards the setting sun like all tombs of this type. The setting sun is thus thought to have been of special significance to the builders 📷 Andy Corbly

The Gleninsheen wedge tombs are two #prehistoric wedge tombs located in the north central area of the Burren area of County Clare, #Ireland. Both are aligned east-west, and there is evidence of contemporary etchings on some of the stone.

Excavated circular pit at the kurgan, containing a burial.
Revova Kurgan 3 is a monumental structure in Ukraine's North Pontic Steppe. Originally an Eneolithic ritual site, it was used as a burial mound by the Bronze Age Yamna culture. Does this reuse of sacred spaces indicate cultural continuity? #TombTuesday 🏺 #Archaeology

Figure of a knight lying on a slab, which is set on a later 17th C table tomb, his head in a mail covering, resting on a cushion under a symbolic carved stone coronet. He is bearing a shield with coat of arms, with sword by his left side, his legs crossed at the knee with right leg (under the left) touching a lion figure. Low light is coming in from window above.

La Barbière in Crossac (Loire-Atlantique) is the remains of a passage grave. The chamber is covered by a 20-ton 4x3m capstone now only supported on 3 orthostats. The passage has 2 capstones which have slipped and now rest an angle. This card c.1905. #TombTuesday.

This is the upper half of a C2nd AD tombstone for a Roman cavalryman, found in Cumbria. Unfortunately, with the bottom half lost, we don’t know his name. His portrait shows him skewering a prone enemy with his lance, probably just as he’d like to be remembered no doubt.

I had an interesting day yesterday visiting the remains of 16 megalithic tombs, about which little or no information can currently be found online. Sometimes, nothing beats an old-fashioned map and a day out in the field.

Really lichen this gravestone. Sorry 😆
It loves the local limestone, so much so in this case that it was impossible to read most of the lettering...
