How high could oil prices go – and what might the global economic fallout be? Crude prices could surpass their 2008 record, with potentially dire effects for consumers and businesses

This is a great time to paint in 24/7 bus lanes, and 'curb plunk' protected bike and roll lanes. #TrafficEvaporation evaporates the need to burn gasoline and diesel #oil. Fast. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Limiting road access for private cars means you reverse #InducedDemand. It's why the more lanes you add, the more traffic you get

When you remove lanes you get the opposite: #TrafficEvaporation. Happens every time redundant roads like this are removed, or bus lanes added

This what an important part of what climate action looks like. . . Deciding that more urban space should be for people who are sitting, but not in cars. You don't have to call it #trafficevaporation - #placemaking is much the same thing. (My photo, Barcelona Dec 2024)

I think this is almost, but not quite, right. When you make a city better for other ways of getting around (e.g. Paris, Barcelona, Seoul) it seem to make things better for the smaller number of people driving. #trafficevaporation is powerful!

I'm thinking of this in context of the provincial climate target of 25% less traffic by 2020 (a stretch goal, but 10 or 15% is easy) - #TrafficEvaporation. Seoul removed 16 elevated freeways and replaced with bus lanes. Paris has cut traffic in half. And all that wasted land!

I'm still amazed by the #Seoul bus rapid transit ( #BRT ) network. It has some flaws, but so impressive overall. I'm still trying to find a major traffic jam... nothing much so far. #trafficevaporation

PS. I'm in Seoul today, which has an amazing network of BRT lines that complement the metro system.

Seoul has removed many elevated freeways, and traffic flows better as a result of prioritizing public transit. #trafficevaporation

The NY congestion relief charge is in place. This is good. Also, Paris is doing even better without a similar pricing mechanism, by reallocating road space to trigger #trafficevaporation. ecoplanning.ca/wp-content/u... #NewYork

LETTER: Saanich should move quickly to allocate more lanes for buses People choose to ride public transit instead of driving when transit gets priority

At the end of 2024, there are still people who don't accept "that reallocating road space to bus lanes results in #trafficevaporation"

There are also people who don't accept that you can easily carry toilet paper on a bicycle.

But not very many. www.saanichnews.com/opinion/lett... #yyj

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Highway expansion makes traffic worse and increases greenhouse gas pollution. And reallocating road space to create bus lanes can speed up car traffic. #InducedTraffic #TrafficEvaporation

Image of part of letter to editor on newspaper website:

Traffic evaporation will really happen

This space has been flooded with letters claiming that installing a bus lane on McKenzie Avenue by removing a “car lane” would “obviously” lead to more traffic congestion and that those who claim that “traffic evaporation” is indeed a thing live in a world of “rainbows and unicorns”.

In science, the obvious answer is often the wrong answer. If we were to believe our eyes, the sun revolves around the Earth; the Earth is, of course, flat, and a ball of lead accelerates towards the ground “faster” than a feather.

And yet, we know that none of these examples are true.

The same applies to traffic. We have known for many decades that increasing the number of “car lanes” simply attracts more traffic and that, on the other hand, removing them does indeed lead to a phenomenon known in the specialized literature as “traffic evaporation.” (Full text of letter in link in post)

Most cities and regions didn't lock in GHG reductions in transport sector by painting in bus lanes, and creating bike and roll lanes and pedestrian areas. Opportunities for easy #trafficevaporation squandered. Highway expansion continues. Predictable, and predicted, results. #inducedtraffic

Let’s design roads to reduce greenhouse gases

As someone who has lived my 60-plus years here in Victoria, I am scratching my head about the strange anomaly that exists in Victoria.

Many groups preach about the climate emergency and the need to have more cycling infrastructure. But there are some of us who still need a car or truck for a variety of reasons.

Yet the new designs for roads, especially in Victoria, makes no sense. There are several bike lanes that prevent a car from turning right via a stop light because of a bike — yet there are no bikes in sight.

So, I sit in my car and spew more greenhouse gases. Does that make any sense?

Likewise, roads are now closed off to vehicle traffic so that my journey from A to B takes a very convoluted route. How does this help the climate emergency?

Could there not be some thought to make things inclusive for everyone, not just cyclists?
