Why we did it: We had a growing problem with bad actors forking TrueNAS, selling closed-source commercial derivatives under their own brands, and ignoring GPL and other licensing obligations. No attribution. No contribution back to the project. No support for the community or the engineering effort that built what they’re reselling. Unfortunately...

So far I have liked what I have seen from the #truenas project. They haven’t been afraid to take big decisions they feel are right for the project (see also: virtualization). But they also seem open to listening to the community and changing course when needed.

Happy to see that #truenas are working to restore some support for SMART drive monitoring. I have been holding off upgrading from 25.04 due to concerns about this. forums.truenas.com/t/we-re-brin...

So I stood up a Mattermost instance for customer notifications. TrueNAS made it simple, and my Virtualmin+NetBird setup makes it easy to expose it to the world. I'll probably keep this setup until TrueNAS gets generic webhook alert support.
