Moa skeleton from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.

Moa skeleton from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.

This whole #ColossalBio de-extinction thing is _so_ stupid.

HOWEVER, I fell in love with moas when I first saw one in 2004 @ the #UMMZ. The general public (outside NZ, maybe?) has never _heard_ of them before, so the fact that moas are getting some press (if for the wrong reasons) gives me joy :) 🧪

Some of the #ummz mammal division students got in on a little moose antler cleaning today!!! The antlers were part of a donation to our collection, but needed a little TLC before going into the cabinets.

UMMZ Division of Mammals // MorphoSource The Division of Mammals at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology was established in 1837, and has grown steadily to its current size, with over 150,000 specimens. An important feature of the mammal collection at the Museum of Zoology is our emphasis on non-traditional specimens; that is, preparations that go beyond or replace the traditional skin and skull. Our fluid collection numbers over 15,000 specimens.

I am happy to announce that #ummz #mammalogy has recently updated its user agreements on @MorphoSource, and we now can support “open download” to more than 2,000 CT datasets! More datasets are to come. Click on the link below for access.

You can tell a lot about a #naturalhistory museum by looking at its shipping boxes! In #mammalogy, wood crates are often used to ship specimens. This box was sent by the @ROMtoronto to the #ummz, but it also has spent time at the @AMNH & @zsiwrcpune.

There has only been one wolverine sighting in Michigan in the last 200 years — What makes us "The Wolverine State"? - The Daily J One of Michigan's several nicknames is "The Wolverine State." Yet the wolverine has only been seen once in Michigan in at least 200 years. On this Daily J, WWJ's Brian Fisher explores what happened to the largest member of the weasel family, and how Michigan got its nickname. (Credit: Roy Lewis/Detroit Zoo)

Return of the creature feature … on TikTok Charlie Engelman, BS ‘14, counts 1.6M followers at ‘oddanimalspecimens,’ his wildly entertaining take on the slimy and sublime. Fun facts abound at U-M’s research collections as Engelman tweezes and teaches his way around spiny lumpsuckers, blood-sucking sea lampreys, and more.

Thanks to ⁦@WorldByCharlie⁩ for rocking this interview & the continued support of the ⁦@UMich⁩ #naturalhistory collections!

The Switch: A Bill Stanley Story
The Switch: A Bill Stanley Story Director of Collections Bill Stanley told and retold a story from his own life—when "the switch" went on and he fell in love with science. Bill's story exemplifies the mission of natural history museums: to encourage anyone, from youngsters to adults, to pursue discoveries and to foster a love and understanding of science and natural history. On October 6, 2015, Bill passed away suddenly while conducting fieldwork in Ethiopia. In his 25 years at The Field Museum, Bill's knowledge of his field and generous personality inspired countless young scientists, particularly mammalogists, as well as colleagues all over the world. We hope this short film honoring Bill's legacy switches something on for you, whether you have a curious young mind or a depth of knowledge to share with others.

I did my first virtual #ummz collection tour this morning w/Ms. Krebs’ 1st grade class from @DexterSchools, and I shared the late, great Bill Stanley’s #TheSwitch story to start things off. Hopefully at least a few “switches” were flipped today...
