How are higher education peeps responding to AI in their creative assessments / #unessay work? I’m slightly anxious by the way AI can be used to make primary sources, but I don’t want to restrict students to only crafted or handmade assessments. #skyhistorians
Title and abstract screen shot from a website. Text reads Sex and the Social Order: Creative Approaches to Teaching the History of Gender and Sexuality in Modern Britain Laura Harrison , Rose Wallis, Alexis Evans, Libby Everall First published: 29 August 2025 Abstract 'Sex and the Social Order: Gender and Sexuality in Modern Britain' is a second-year optional module for history students at the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE). The module examines histories of gender and sexuality from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, providing a wealth of accessible primary material and a diversity of scholarship for students to engage with. This article reflects on the space we have attempted to create within this module for students to engage imaginatively and creatively with history, with a focus on producing original public-facing research outputs and fostering a community of researchers amongst our students.
The 3rd article for our Creative History in the Classroom is out by laura Harrison & @drrosewallis.bsky.social. It’s a great read on creativity as inclusive community making & #unessay. It’s also a powerful reminder about the current state of HE! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #skyistorians
#skyhistorians do you use the creative assessment/ #unessay? Perhaps you’re interested in it! Check out @moderndecorum.bsky.social’s wonderful article on creativity as queer practice. This is the 2nd article to come out for @cathfeely.bsky.social &my Creative History in the Classroom special issue!

Just finished marking my creative assessment pieces. I had so much fun engaging with them. Once again my students produced some exceptional work! I had diaries, plays, slum narratives, mags, sewing projects, games & a digital map. This is such a great assessment to end my marking stint on. #unessay
UnEssay day (1 of 2) for Molecular Cell Biology today was a big hit! #UnEssay
The #unessay — another wonderful authentic activity to disrupt the compliance-based nature of traditional schooling and restore the JOY of learning! 👇🏻
Last semester I guided six (6) sections of US I, US II, and World I classes through #UnEssay projects. Student and faculty buy-in: extensive. Payoff: sublime. Here are a few of the best.
Great advice on using the #unessay from Dr. Hilary Green, Davidson College: scaffolding, rubrics, process includes attempts and modifications & a required bibliography, including a materials list. #AHA25 @thetattooedprof.bsky.social @drmendozan.bsky.social
ICYMI: *Teaching History: A Journal of Methods* had a whole issue on using the #unessay. #AHA25

We're about to embark on our #UnEssay symposium in my #PlantsAndPeople class in which each student did a creative project based on 1-2 economically important plants. It's always my favorite day in this class, but this year there is a particularly auspicious first slide! #OnlyInLouisiana
And I love how @friede.bsky.social is doing #UnEssay work with her students - some are writing serious critical essays on media or gaming. But others are designing interactive fictions or doing other creative work. 🔥 #Pedagogy
Looking forward to doing an #unessay workshop w/ @cjdenial.bsky.social @jackiantonovich.bsky.social
& @rebawissner.bsky.social at the H-Net Teaching Conference!
A shorter thread but I want to share a few of the #unessay projects from my Intro to Fiction class this term. These included accompanying artist’s statements which I won’t reproduce but will gesture toward them. Lots, though not all, were inspired by *Station Eleven* &/or *Psalm for the Wild-Built*
Looking forward to co-facilitating a workshop on the #unessay at #OAH24 on Friday at 3:30 with two historian powerhouses: @geekypedagogy.bsky.social and @jackiantonovich.bsky.social!
You #skystorians 🗃 know that I'm a big fan of the #unessay. But did you know that I'm co-facilitating a #OAH24 teaching workshop about #unessays? Friday @ 3:30 @jackiantonovich.bsky.social @rebawissner.bsky.social #oah24

Friends, tell me about "unessay" assignments in the humanities. I am teaching the second half of the US survey online and thinking about offering an #unessay option. How does it work for you? Can you share your syllabus or assignment instructions? #academicsky #history
Thanks for the shoutout, Professor Bruff! #unessay @magsupstate.bsky.social

It's the time of the year when I grade #unessay midterms, inspired by @cjdenial.bsky.social years ago.

Have you used an #Unessay or similar assignment in a class? Considering submitting a piece—perhaps an unarticle?—to The Unessay Companion I'm co-editing with @TextualScholar & @DanielPaulOD www.humanitiesinnovationlab.ca/post/cfp-the-unessay-com...
Had so much fun watching this students' #unessay project, which uses the Sims to think through some of the questions about AI we discussed this semester—her narration of her Sim's day prompted many giggles from my & my boys.

What could I be more thankful for than a great group of #Ichthyology students @UCOCMS !?! With their permission, I'm posting their #unessay creative works on the theme "What Fishes Mean To Me". All gave a ~5 min story to frame their works. Posted are some highlights! 🧵
This semester, I tasked my Ichthyology students at UCO with a creative #unessay assignment on the topic "What Fishes Mean to Me". Today is the big day for them to show and tell! Excited to see what they've come up with.
Stay tuned, I may be able to post some photos!
I mentioned last week that I'd show the great #UNessay projects students did from my "The Written Word in Japan: Prehistory to 1600" class 🗾, so here I want to highlight them in one thread! Names/handles appear with permission. They all did fantastic this semester! #pedagogy
A student came up after class to submit her #unessay project. When I started to walk away with it she stopped me. “I just gave you a gift. OPEN IT!!!” She was so proud of the work she’d put in, which included… www.instagram.com/p/B4daCIwhI62/
The first #unessay project from Technologies of Text this term was a beautiful project by Anna Smith remediating Harry Potter as a “modern medieval manuscript.” I share some photos & an excerpt from Anna’s reflection with her permission.
