Retrato de su hermana Virginia Woolf (1912)
A generous and intelligent essay on Vanessa Bell by Heather Christle. I was especially struck by how the figure of the host reframes domestic modernism, and by the return to Mrs Dalloway as a point of pressure. #virginiawoolf #modernism #vanessabell #mrsdalloway

Virginia Woolf (1912)
Three distinct artistic portrayals of the same woman across different mediums and styles. On the left is a bronze sculpture bust featuring a smooth, stylized face wearing a gleaming, polished golden helmet, evoking a modern yet classical sensibility. The central panel is a painting with bold, expressive brushstrokes and a vivid red background, depicting her seated on a patterned couch, wearing a deep black dress with a round brooch at the chest, her hands gently clasped in her lap. The rightmost panel is a more realistic oil painting, presenting the woman in a confident stance with her hand on her hip, dressed in a crisp white blouse, green cardigan, and brown skirt, her expression calm yet assertive against a muted backdrop. Together, the three works highlight different interpretations of the subject’s personality and presence through sculpture and painting.

A horizontally narrow gouache drawing in a light brown wooden frame, hung on a slate-blue wall, with a wall text plaque at lower right. The center of the drawing depicts a fruit still life in a white pedasteled vase, against a dark background and framed within a gold rectangle. To either side are mirror reflections of the same geometric pattern. A dark outer border contains pink circles - 4 each at top and bottom 6 on the vertical edge. The square between the border and the still life at center contains a gold rectangle, and another smaller rectangle with a blue oval in the center, against a gold background.

New on the blog today, a few thoughts about VANESSA BELL: A World of Form and Colour.
I saw the exhibition at the MK Gallery, Milton Keynes, but it's available to view at the 'Charleston in Lewes' centre until 21st Sept. #VanessaBell #ArtSky #Lewes #Art

Back at #charleston - #vanessabell studio with a sculpture of #virginiawoolf & just the most beautiful space. I know #bloomsbury were hyper privileged but she had huge heartbreak too - Bell’s bare walled bedroom after the death of her son is devastating.

Vanessa Bell, Portrait of Molly MacCarthy, 1914-5
Duncan Grant, Catherine Cox, 1913
Browsing through Wendy Hitchmough's 'The Bloomsbury Look', once again I am enraptured by the artists' individual expression and evolution in composition, palette and texture, and their lifelong creative journeys.
Imagine being there when this was happening...
