A wonderful vintage 1950s 60s handmade copper enamel on gilt metal modernist beatnik Musical design compact designed by American designer/enamelist Judith Daner (1936-2023) for the Robert Wuersch company of Fall River, MA.
The copper enamel section is entirely handmade and has a wonderful mid century modernist design of musical instruments! The copper enamel section is laid down on a standard gilt metal compact base that opens to reveal a mirror and powder section. The compact measures 2-7.8" by 2-1/2" by just under 3/8" thick. Although this compact is unmarked presently, it no doubt originally had a paper label by Wuersch company. In addition, I have the same design pair of bookends for sale in my store California Dreaming here on Ruby Lane for comparison, and there is no doubt it is by Daner for Wuersch. The inside is in great shape with just a few spots of tarnish to the mirror and inside surfaces. There is considerable wear and tarnish to the bottom of the compact as shown, but of course this is not really visible when in use or displayed in a collection.

Judith Daner (1936 - 2023) biography
Based in Ashland, enamellist Judith Daner was raised in New York and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before settling in Massachusetts. In her early 20s, she began her career doing finish work at an enamel giftware company in Connecticut. Her illustrious art career started with pencil illustrations in the Far Rockaway High School yearbook. She later graduated with Top Honors from Parsons School of Design in NY. She began her work as a designer for Bovano of Cheshire, CT, and Robert Wuersch Associates of Fall River, MA, for whom she designed an enormous catalog of influential mid-century art. She also created numerous special commissions for corporate institutions. Her work graced the windows of Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and she had the rare honor of having three pieces selected for the 1975 Limoges Biennale Internationale in France. Her work is in private collections and has been shown in galleries worldwide. However, as she developed her style and technique, she continued to approach her work not as a metalsmith but as an artist.
First and foremost, Judith was a dynamic art teacher who loved her students. She taught enameling at The Worcester Center for Crafts for over 20 years and at Brookfield Craft Center, de Cordova Museum School, Snowfarm, Metalwerx, and the West Palm Beach Enameling Guild.
Judith Daner's works have been exhibited at the Worcester Center for Crafts and other art venues and institutions. She divided her time between teaching and creating more enamel compositions until she passed away on April 28, 2023.

Still don’t know how to clean vintage compacts so I asked the Museum’s conservator Poe to help. He did what he could but said we need mini q tips to really get into all the little crevices. 😅#MakeupMuseum #VintageCompact

#Museum30, day 24: Back to the 30s again with this Pum-kin Rouge compact, one of the most unique pieces in the Museum’s collection. The design is probably more of a profile than a #silhouette, but does it really matter? 😍 #VintageCompact

Today in vintage vs. new (mew?): If you can’t get your paws on a vintage Paul Flato kitty compact, Paul and Joe’s upcoming one is pretty close. 😻💚 #vintagecompact #makeupmuseum
