Roger Dunn’s Truth About Space..
Emergency Exit
You may recall Amy Teitel of the #VintageSpace discussing exit strategies in the video I posted two weeks ago to accompany the Gemini 6A launch
There is a second method..
I love Orpheus, you guys <3

Hopefully bluesky plays the audio?

Black and white image of the Surveyor 5 lunar lander on the Moon's Mare Tranquillitatis. The lander is partially buried in the lunar soil after a slightly bumpy landing in September 1967. A trench is visible where the footpad slid several feet upon touchdown. This image documents an important test for the safety of future manned lunar missions.

Vintage illustration of NASA's High Energy Astrophysical Observatory (HEAO) spacecraft – HEAO-1, HEAO-2 (Einstein Observatory), and HEAO-3 – orbiting Earth. These satellites, depicted above the planet, played a pivotal role in X-ray astronomy, discovering thousands of celestial sources. Each satellite is labeled A, B, and C respectively.

A stunning 3D stereo image of Saturn and its rings, captured by Voyager 2 in 1981. Requires red/blue 3D glasses to view the effect. The image showcases the planet's majestic rings composed of ice and rock, spanning a vast distance. The perspective is created by combining two images taken weeks apart, highlighting the spacecraft's movement.

Bless Sonnett's patience and affection, as she encouraged my nerdery at Kennedy Space Center. Asking questions and listening to my enthusiastic explanations of SRB Separation and OMS Burns. She does truly love me.

The balsa work now completed on (iteration #2 of) the M2-F3, it is time for me to screw it up by covering it in "Monokote" (a kind of heat-shrink covering that modelers use).
Like everything, it's a learning experience that will hopefully inform how I cover the next iteration.

Wrapping up the balsa-work on the 1/12 scale M2-F3 lifting body.
Feeling like a boat-builder... The original M2-F1 built at Langley Flight Research Center was in fact built by a boat-builder. How the lifting body program began is a fascinating story.
#vintagespace #nasa #balsafliesbetter
1st iteration of the balsa 1/12 scale M2-F3 (60's-era lifting body research plane) to make it to the end.
Lots of problems, placeholders to address in the next iteration. (Wrote many in marker on the plane.)
The body contours looked right so I went all the way — such as it is.
#vintagespace #nasa
Still iterating on the 1/24 scale balsa "x plane". (Actually the M2-F3 experimental lifting body from the 1960's.)
Happy with the body contours. Now fleshing out the fins, nose. Going through a good deal of balsa, CA glue.
Remember, A.B.I.

A CO2 laser has cut some parts out of balsa.
Parts designed on the computer (Affinity Designer 2) are exported as PDFs — grouped to fit on 12" x 4" sheets of balsa.
I have a cheap Chinese laser (a K-40) which easily cuts 3/32" balsa sheets. Standing in the cold garage, I have begun to cut out parts and start assembly.

Always fascinated with the lifting body research done in the 1960's.
After the M2-F2 crashed (see the "The Six Million Dollar Man"), the M2-F3 followed adding a center rudder.
My first go at a 1/12 scale model was with Dupron foam years ago (below).
Starting again in balsa.

Screenshot showing Blender and a Space Tug body being created.
NASA, circa 1970 — the Space Tug was the proposed workhorse of space (like the Pod in "2001"). It was never realized though.
Kid me always wanted a model of it.
That's what I do now for fun — make things I would have loved to have existed when I was a kid.

I was 12 or so when I saw this in a library book. What the hell is that thing? How does it move? (I wondered.)
I decided a double hinge allowed it to "tumble". Later, I found the 1963 patent online (and I was right).
I want to close the circle & build it (for no reason).

I love space art, but I also love space collectibles ✨
This is my boyfriend’s small business. Hunting for unique vintage space stuff and sharing it with others who appreciate it is one of our favorite things to do. Give his account a follow to keep up with new finds!
