Water rail (Rallus aquaticus) wading in a marshy creek in the Bloeidaal area near Amersfoort. At first I thought it was a snipe, but once I got it in focus it was clearly something more special. There was a second one in the background as well, but that one quickly retreated back into the reeds.

Today I managed to photograph the elusive #Waterrail a bird that's often heard and not seen outside of the reeds.

#VandaagGemaakt in de Drentse #natuur. Sommige #vogels hoor ik vrijwel dagelijks maar zie ik slechts af en toe. De #waterral - Rallus aquaticus - bijvoorbeeld. Vanmiddag toch eentje in het moeras van het #HartVanDrenthe. 🪶

I don’t often get to see a #waterrail, let alone this close. It looks a bit like those cartoons with African balloon animals chasing each other. 🪶 #waterral

I went to see the bearded reedlings but found an adult and juvenile waterrail instead. Sort of, the pics of these elusive critters had to come from far. Have you ever heard their call, or rather scream? 😱 Their adult plumage is like patchwork. 🪶 #waterrail #waterral

I almost missed this water rail while birdwatching in the bird hide. At first I thought it was a common coot but I was so happy when I looked through my camera 😁.

Waterral De waterral is een wat geheimzinnige, schaarse broedvogel in Nederland. Hij laat zich zelden zien, maar je kan hem wel horen. Uit het moeras klinkt

Ik word alweer een tijdje elke ochtend wakker met het geluid van een krijsende waterral. En hoe vreemd en niet melodieus dat geluid ook is, ik word er blij van :)
