Today I am mostly spying on the elusive Water Rail taking a bath.

A sunny morning and a good visit to Valleyfield Pond at Penicuik to see the #WaterRail #birdwatching

Water rail (Rallus aquaticus) wading in a marshy creek in the Bloeidaal area near Amersfoort. At first I thought it was a snipe, but once I got it in focus it was clearly something more special. There was a second one in the background as well, but that one quickly retreated back into the reeds.
Water rail (Rallus aquaticus) foraging/fishing in the shallow water with a beautiful reflection.
Water rail (Rallus aquaticus) foraging, and picking something out of the water. The water drops come up with its beak, together with a nice reflection in the still water.
Water rail (Rallus aquaticus) strutting through the shallow water. This is the closest I managed to get, which makes a lot more of its details pop out.
Today I managed to photograph the elusive #Waterrail a bird that's often heard and not seen outside of the reeds.
I got lucky spotting this one foraging and got a few awesome shots! I almost didn't go out because it was cloudy🪶 #Birds #birdphotography #waterrail #waterral #wadingbird #Bloeidaal
Water Rail that I watched at Cley ,Norfolk in December #freehandart #waterrail #cleybirds #wirebirdsculpture #birdart #birdsculpture #originalart
A small bird, facing to the right, picks its way through a patch of water and cut down reeds. The bird has a grey face and underparts, brown and black upperparts, black and white barred flanks, and a long red bill.
This #WaterRail didn't get the memo that it's meant to be shy, secretive, and hiding in the reeds!

The Water Rail, normally difficult to see and photograph but the freezing conditions force them out into the open a bit more. This one of several at Warnham LNR today @sussexwildlife.bsky.social @bbcspringwatch.bsky.social #waterrail #birds

In spring I can hear the waterrails screaming in the reeds (they really scream!), but them being so secretive I rarely see them. 🪶 #Waterrail
Water Rail beak to the right brown crown of head and back, body grey similar in colour to the dead vegetation it picks its way over on those long toed feet.

Two of the many beautiful birds to be found near water. The seldom seen though often heard Water Rail and the often seen, often heard, tricksy to capture Common Tern
I don’t often get to see a #waterrail, let alone this close. It looks a bit like those cartoons with African balloon animals chasing each other. 🪶 #waterral
𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗻𝗴): Front view of a Water Rail on the shore of a pond, staring intently, perhaps searching for something to eat. The light is golden and low-angle, characteristic of the early morning hours, which makes the part of the bird on our right more contrasting. I went to see the bearded reedlings but found an adult and juvenile waterrail instead. Sort of, the pics of these elusive critters had to come from far. Have you ever heard their call, or rather scream? 😱 Their adult plumage is like patchwork. 🪶 #waterrail #waterral

I almost missed this water rail while birdwatching in the bird hide. At first I thought it was a common coot but I was so happy when I looked through my camera 😁.
