I drew a #curlew. These are very hard to draw. #birds #eurasiancurlew
Artwork of a curlew standing in an abstract wetland created using a macro photograph of an old corrugated metal fence with textured layers of weathered flaking paint. In portrait format the dark bird is standing upright near the bottom of the image in what looks like a small pool with lighter colours behind and vague horizontal bands of fine detail above.

42& of the UK's wintering Curlew were found along open coasts. Population declines between 1997/98 and 2015/16 were marked on the open coasts.

Estuarine counts only capture what is happening to just over half of our #Curlew.
In estuaries and along coasts, Curlew numbers declined between 1997/98 and 2015/16.

Bush Stone-curlew study in coloured pencil. These birds are full of character & their plaintive wailing call is impressive too! #drawing #bird #curlew #birdart #illustration
Heard a curlew on our walk above the lake yesterday. #Curlew #ForTheBirds
The thick drops are caused by the very salty water of the Black Sea

I have the same walk when the water is cold…

I eagerly await her return each year & this morning, there she was! 🥰 #Curlew CJ6 ringed as a chick in central #Finland in 2012, this is her 13th spring staging on the #AlstonWetland patch. 3-4 weeks fattening up on #Lancashire's finest earthworms then she'll be off once again. #waders #shorebirds
The Eurasian curlew is Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List with a decreasing population trend. Causes of its decline include factors such as moorland and marsh loss, high predation rates on chicks and eggs, climate change and more. It is the largest wading bird in Europe. It is native to large ranges of Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are migratory and are found on wetlands and estuaries in the winter and moorland in the summer. The species consumes small invertebrates. The Northern lapwing (also known as the 'peewit') is classed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List with a decreasing population trend. It is on the UK Red List. This species has a large range encompassing Europe, parts of Asia and Northern Africa. The majority of the global population are migratory but some are sedentary. Its habitat includes wet meadows and grasslands, moorland and swamps at low altitude (<1000m). It can also be terrestrial as well as using freshwater and saltwater. They breed between March and June on arable grassland and has declined in the UK by 55% due to reduction in this type of habitat. They feed on invertebrates.
