Name This Bird! I'm a medium-sized Old World scavenger, known for my predominantly dull, mottled brown plumage. My most distinctive feature is the conspicuous white back, which is particularly visible in flight against my darker body. I have a long, unfeathered neck and head, usually dark grey to blackish. My preferred habitats are savannas and open woodlands in sub-Saharan Africa, where I'm often seen soaring high in the sky or perched in trees. Sadly, my species is critically endangered. 🌍 White-backed vulture (Gyps africanus) The white-backed vulture is a medium-sized African vulture, identifiable by its distinctive white lower back (visible in flight), white neck ruff, and dark plumage. Its bald head and long neck aid in feeding. It is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, preferring open woodlands and savannas with tall trees for nesting. Highly social, white-backed vultures are obligate scavengers, typically among the first to arrive at a carcass. They soar on thermals for hours, locating food by sight and observing other scavengers.
