This photograph captures a Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) at the most dramatic instant of takeoff - wings thrust wide in a powerful V-shape, body still low on the water, surrounded by an explosive burst of white spray and churned foam.
The rich, deep blue of the rippling water fills the entire frame, making the brilliant white bird stand out with striking contrast, while a quiet marker post in the upper right anchors the scene with a sense of place.

What makes this moment truly extraordinary is just how much raw effort it takes for these birds to become airborne. Mute swans are among the heaviest flying birds in the world, often weighing 10–12 kg, and they need up to 30 metres of open water as a runway, running hard across the surface, feet pounding the water for traction, while their enormous wings beat furiously to generate lift.
It is a breathtaking blend of brute strength and elegance: a creature too heavy to simply leap into the air, yet powerful enough to conquer gravity through sheer determination and speed.
The fact that such a large, seemingly ungainly bird can transform itself from a gliding water dweller into a bird capable of flying at up to 80 km/h makes every takeoff a small miracle of nature

For Alan’s @alan678.bsky.social #BirdOfTheDay here’s a mute swan taking off. It’s amazing how a bird with a weight of about 10 kg and more can do that.

Taken a couple of years ago, this is big brother with little sister. These are transient orcas swimming just off the coast of Bainbridge Island near Seattle.

My fave. Way to go Gecko! Prey isn’t always prey. We were in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park -Kalahari Desert- in June. Saw many Pale Chanting Goshawks. They often hang out in a “three amigos” set-up with Honey Badgers & Black-backed Jackals. #wildlife #wildlifphotography flip.it/8U7CLy

I love how hummingbirds change color depending on how the light hits them. These two pics are of the same Anna’s Hummingbird. #birds #hummingbirds #pnw #pnwadventures #pnwphotographer #naturephotography #naturelovers #wildlife #wildlifphotography #wildlifephotographer
