Contrary to what their name and appearance suggest, Wolf Eels are a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Anarhichadidae, the wolf fishes. They aren't eels at all!

A close-up photograph taken at the Seaside Aquarium in Seaside, Oregon, shows the head and upper body of a Wolf Eel (Anarrhichthys ocellatus) resting on what appears to be the sandy or rocky bottom of its enclosure. The eel has a robust, elongated body with a predominantly grey coloration, overlaid with irregular dark grey to black spots of varying sizes. Its head is large and somewhat blunt, with a visible small, dark eye. The mouth is closed, but the thick lips and the suggestion of strong, protruding teeth give it a distinctive appearance. The texture of the eel's skin appears slightly rough or wrinkled. To the left of the head, a portion of a fin, likely a pectoral fin, is visible, showing a similar grey and spotted pattern. The background is slightly blurred but suggests a brownish substrate. The lighting appears to be artificial, likely from above or in front of the enclosure.
