Here is a landscape nature photo I took of a snowy field in the Shenandoah Valley. The field's white triangle of hill meets a wedge of snow-covered trees. A white sky above reflects the snow below. The smoothness of the top and bottom of this image is contrasted by the inky texture of trees severing the scene in half. As an artist and writer, I see paper everywhere. Negative space makes me want to recreate moments and fill in the blank. Being drawn in by this wintery expanse inspired my latest haiku: snowy field the vastness of a blank page

Here is a black and white breakwater photo I took in the Bahamas, off Great Abaco. These man-made structures are designed to mimic the appearance of shoals, but their job is to protect the coast from high-energy waves and storms. The pitted rocks stretch diagonally across the sea, from right to left, like a bridge over calm waves. The sky is strewn with a delicate mixture of clouds; my favorite being the wispy cirrus in the upper right that looks like a fishbone or a feathery arrow. Between the rugged rocks and soft sky, the ocean appears wrinkly, almost silken, leading to a distant line of shore. The tinest sailboat drifts on the right, facing left. Standing before this clutch of serenity, I couldn’t help but wonder: what stories does each rock hold? Every dip, crack, and dent becomes a word. From all angles, different pages emerge. Yet, all we can read is on the surface. What dwells deeper within or beneath the tides? An ocean of libraries. This is a macro nature photo I took of the Hellebore buds in our front yard. I planted them last year, and their displays of hardiness do not disappoint! It’s one of my favorite winter-blooming flowers. Deep forest green leaves rimmed in aubergine and violet, cradle two dark magenta buds. The largest bud faces right. Tipped upward, its outer petals catch light, revealing stomata flecks patterned like an unopened galaxy. The flower and leaves soften into a dark purple and pink background bokeh. Like many beautiful creatures found in nature, it is important to note that Hellebore is poisonous (it contains glycosides and saponins). I wear gloves while pruning because they’re so feisty. Hellebore’s tenebrous allure inspired my latest haiku: mountain creek thaws the poison garden stirs itself

This is a photo I took overlooking St. John’s Trunk Bay—one of my favorite places. In the off season, it becomes so quiet and even more beautiful. Before the trade winds pick up, the breeze feels like a sweet caress mimicked by the tides. The bay cups a blue gradient from clear aquamarine to deep indigo. Tropical green trees, distant mountains, and companion islands frame the small stretch of perfect powder-soft sand. The blue sky above holds fluffy clouds—the slow kind that morph into fairytale creatures. It’s one of the few places I actively miss and dream about. I found a piece of myself on this tiny island, under a Jumbie Tree. I look at this photo on dreary days. My new haiku sums up how it feels to stand in St. John’s soft waves. apogee of gentle wind satin tides Gentle wind is a local autumn kigo, as the trade winds slacken between summer and their winter peak.

This is a macro photo I took at dusk of our last summer peony. Soft pink layers of outer petals curve in and out of light and shadows. Fine points of focus create crisp edges that stand out amid the dominant bokeh. The way peonys slowly open, reminds me that it's okay not to rush. Our story isn't a race, it's an epic saga. This thought and image inspired my latest free verse haiku: scent of warmth sun's saga flips through peony

Here is a macro photo I took of our last bi-color snapdragon in the front garden. The day was beautifully grey and rainy. Though there was no chance of seeing a tropical sunset, this flower held the might of dusk's glory in its misty face. This scoop of autumn sherbert glows against green peeps of background bokeh. Bending in for a closer look with my camera, I became enchanted by the perfect spheres scattered across its pink-red-orange-yellow petals. Within each crystal ball raindrop, a small universe of color and light. Their augury? My new 3-5-3 haiku: Snapdragon Vivid glow Drops of sky roll on Dragon's tongue

A macro nature photo I took of mistflowers near our forest line. These fringed fireworks are a herald of autumn. Always a delightful surprise, so delicate, wispy, and bright—even their berrylike disk florets are stunning. I shot this at an angle, to show off the variations of its floral tiers. Before the vast meadow, their periwinkle glow stands out against a green grass bokeh.

Orange Daylilies remind me of home. We've always had them in the front yard, and loyally, they bloom every Summer. This is a macro nature photo I took of water droplets along one of the green buds, facing an open lily. Within a lower drop, the flower can be seen, magnified, highlighting details blurred by the bokeh.

Here is a macro nature photo I took of a very scrappy blue tiger swallowtail, on a purple butterfly bush, in the front yard. I’m convinced that their wings are black and blue to match their fistacuff souls. This capture happened right after it flutter-thrashed a yellow swallowtail that tried to take the flower away. It was the most beautiful “Flight Club” fight I’ve ever seen. Who knew butterflies could be so brutal? Entomologists. It is not surprising that their wings have tears, scratches, and holes.

I awoke as fog rolled over the spring mountain, and took this landscape photo deep within the Primland forest. In wavering veils, the understory blinked in and out of its mossy bed. Half monochrome, half green—a white softness layers the distance with ghostly limbs. How hauntingly beautiful the saplings were in their slender splays of sleepy branches, appearing and disappearing like dendritic secrets.

I awoke as fog rolled over the spring mountain, and took this landscape photo deep within the Primland forest. In wavering veils, the understory blinked in and out of its mossy bed. Half monochrome, half green—a white softness layers the distance with ghostly limbs. How hauntingly beautiful the saplings were in their slender splays of sleepy branches, appearing and disappearing like dendritic secrets.

Here is a nature photo I took over the forest after a short thunderstorm. This prism appeared as the grateful evening reveled in its stormy delights. The poplars, cedars, red buds, pine, and oaks have been enjoying our daily sprinkles—their alternating shades cup the rainbow as it stretches over the pastel pink and blue distance.

A macro nature photo I took of the Firewitch Dianthus we planted 3 years ago that keeps coming back in a blaze of glory every spring. This single hot pink blossom holds dewdrops each morning—they collect along its 6 petals like tiny crystal balls. The star-shaped flower pops against the dark morning background bokeh, crosshatched with its blue-green leaf blades.

I took this landscape photo at the foot of Denver's Rocky Mountain range. I'm guessing that the half-covered peak is Mt. Meeker? The snowstorm rolled in so quickly, it was difficult to identify without a pinnacle for reference. The scene was primarily monochromatic, and choosing black-and-white proved easy. The sweeping clouds, highlighted in morning light and shadowed by storm, add mystery to the dramatic rocky ridges laced in snow.

A macro nature photo I took of my Jack A. Sand Azalea after late-day rain. The whole world sparkled, even droplets in the shadows caught light and glistened. This one blossom stood out beneath the rest, dappled in evening light. The glitter of its white-pink-peach petals highlights the raindrops, and its singular red stamen swoops outward holding its green tip like an offering. The background is a shadowy bokeh with green flecking. The misted stems and buds surrounding the main flower lift toward the upper left frame.

Here is a macro nature photograph I took of the Mimosa blossoms, blooming in my backyard. We planted this Mimosa 7 years ago. This is its first year blooming, and it decided to do so on my father's birthday. What a very special year for a very special tree. The hot pink stamen filaments look like fireworks against the soft blue and purple bokeh of the background. Pops of blurred pink hint at more surrounding blossoms. Its green buds peep and hide around the flowers like verdant mines about to burst into bloom.
