Lovely display in the Evolution Garden @nhm-london.bsky.social. #Wollemia nobilis, #Wollemi Pine, in front a a dinosaur. A living fossil, thought extinct and only discovered in Australia in 1994, is a member of the Araucariaceae family. As is the monkey puzzle (Araucaria araucana) planted nearby.

Meet The World’s Most ‘Safeguarded’ Tree—A Jurassic Survivor Thought Extinct Until 1994 The Wollemi Pine’s bark looks like bubbling chocolate—but its real secret? It’s a 200-million-year-old survivor from the age of dinosaurs.

Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis)
Closely protected, a handful of this conifer species (part of the 200 million year-old Araucariaceae family) was discovered in 1994 New South Wales (AUS). Like finding a dinosaur.

#Wollemia nobilis, the Wollemi Pine, a member of the Araucariaceae family.
A living fossil as thought extinct and only discovered in Australia in 1994.
It grows surprisingly well in colder climates, producing protective caps on their buds.

Wollemia bark is my favourite - looks like coco-pops. Not that you would use the bark to identify #Wollemia!
