Mazon Monday #301: Cordaianthus ovatus This is Mazon Monday post #301. What’s your favorite Mazon Creek fossil? Tell us at email:esconi.info@gmail.com. Whole-plant reconstruction of Cordaites borassifolius (Sternberg) Unger (reconstruction by J. Svoboda). Cordaianthus ovatus is thought to be the fertile structure for Cordaites borassifolius (see Mazon Monday #299), an extinct genus of early gymnosperms. Cordaites probably grew to more than 100 feet tall in swampy conditions, forming forests similar to modern day mangroves.

Excited to see this out!! In this thought-provoking review led by @davidperis.bsky.social and Ricardo Pérez-de la Fuente we further demonstrate that insect #pollination was once widespread among #gymnosperms and existed long before the origin of #angiosperms

What's still lacking in my BlueSky happiness? Why, a gymnosperm feed/starterpack/list of course. I guess it is too niche. Oh, and unless you know *exactly* what a gymnosperm is, it's not what you think it is. #gymnosperms

This is an idea I've had which is explained below, but there are some caveats to this, one of which being a lack of corresponding/ conspecific female organs also with suitable anatomy. Thoughts? #paleobotany #paleoart #plants
