Integrating trees in pastures is an under-utilized and under-appreciated way to boost livestock health and happiness, and also creates wildlife habitat and boosts biodiversity. Best are #silvopasture / #woodpasture systems.

A field of young oaks, wild cherry, birch, willow, elderberry, salmonberry, Western red & Alaskan yellow cedar, Background trees of spruce, poplar, cottonwood. The grass is predominantly invasive reed canary.
Proxy #Woodpasture. "Proxy", because this client does not own livestock, so the impacts are human (myself). The young oaks sprouted from acorns tossed in the grass a few years ago. The grass is "trampled" with a riding mower, blades turned off. Livestock would do better, but this beats a lawn.

Save the old wood-pastures!
And create new ones.

Excellent!
Just going to tag this: #Woodpasture
Such a beautiful place. Must be a feast for the senses.

Sunlight streams through willow and poplar trees onto ornamental viburnum, Japanese maple, Chinese wisteria, grass and forbs cover the ground.
3 large crabapple trees in full pink bloom in a grassy pasture. These are humming with bees.
A large oak overhangs a pond.
A European elderberry amidst willow trees. Tall grass in the foreground.
I manage this client's property as a "proxy" #woodpasture. "Proxy" : because he does not own any livestock, so occasional mowing serves to "graze" the pasture. I've begun pollarding the willows and poplars, and haul the fodder to my goats at home. Mixed native, and ornamental plants abound.
So nice! The world needs so much more.

A glorious dawn chorus at Ashcombe Bottom near Lewes, a wonderful wood of veteran oaks, hazel coppice diverse scrub and chalk grassland. In the summer you can experience Adonis Blue flying with White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillaries if you are lucky #woodpasture #chalkgrassland
Large trees (likely oaks) in a wood pasture with a moody sky.
There is not enough #woodpasture content here on Blue Sky, because there is not enough wood pasture in this world.
Here are some wood pasture videos.
And go, create wood pasture.
Thorny, diverse, and (nearly) wild.

The #WoodPasture makes this beautiful location in #TheGreatTrossachsForest all the more special (we think so anyway!) 💚
On a sunny summer’s day the blue waters of Loch Katrine shimmer in the foreground with the partially wooded slope of the hills to the north clothed with tall dark green conifers in the foreground and patches of low scrubby native wood pasture above on the otherwise grassy slopes. Remnants of ancient wood pasture hover above more modern exotic conifer plantation along the braes of Loch Katrine 🏴
This catchment scale landscape is being restored to native woodland cover by Forestry & Land Scotland within the wider Great Trossachs Forest project.

Neohygrocybe ovina (Blushing Waxcap). A group of small, dark mushrooms growing amongst grass.
Cordyceps militaris (Scarlet Caterpillarclub). A bunch of small, club-shaped, orange stalks growing amongst short grass.
Clavaria zollingeri (Violet Coral). An irregular mass of branching, pale purple stems, growing amongst grass and moss.
Hygrocybe splendidissima (Splendid Waxcap). A group of small, pinkish-red mushrooms amongst grass. Some have been picked and laid on their sides to show that the stalk fades from pink to yellow towards the base.
For #MushroomMonday, some wonderful grassland fungi found on our field meeting at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, yesterday. Thanks to Phil Ambler for the photos. Names included in the alt text. #fungus #fungi #KentNature #woodpasture
Making a good case for more cider orchards with high levels of biodiversity and varied products, as well as carbon capture and storage. Seems like drinking traditional cider is the way forward!
