Kaedan and his family did not mind the cold most of the time, as they were eathyian dracids, or eathyian dragon-bloods. Not actual dragons themselves; they simply had blood that had been fused with that of their ancestral dragons, which granted them granted them the gift of dragon magic in addition to rarely used wings sealed within markings, scalding hot blood, and fire breath. Almost 175 years ago, dragons still roamed the world and found themselves being killed off by a virus. Thus, they took their gods-given gifts and infused their blood and magic into zhasic, or humanoid, people whom they deemed worthy enough of carrying on their legacies.
