Yosemite Falls In Black And White II

The photograph captures Yosemite Falls in stark black and white, transforming the familiar cascade into something almost mythic. The towering granite walls rise like ancient monoliths, their surfaces etched with deep shadows and pale highlights that feel cold to the touch—like stone that has never fully warmed, even in summer.

From the upper reaches of the frame, the waterfall plunges downward in a long, silken ribbon of white. In monochrome, the water looks less like liquid and more like drifting smoke or torn fabric, pulled relentlessly by gravity. You can almost hear the distant roar—a low, continuous thunder softened by the winter air.

Along the sides of the falls clings the “beard” of ice: thick, frozen drapery that appears heavy and brittle. It hangs in jagged layers, like crystal armor. You can imagine the texture—rough, sharp, and cold enough to sting your fingertips. In places, the ice catches the light and glows faintly, as if lit from within.

The surrounding cliffs are massive and brooding. Their surfaces are mottled with snow and shadow, giving them a rugged, weathered presence. The air in the scene feels crisp and thin, the kind that fills your lungs with a clean, metallic chill.

The overall mood is powerful and serene at once—nature in its raw winter form, stripped of color, leaving only texture, contrast, and the elemental force of falling water.

Yosemite Falls in Black and White

The photograph opens like a breath of cold mountain air—Yosemite Falls rising out of the valley in stark black‑and‑white drama, every detail sharpened by winter’s grip.
The upper fall dominates the frame, a white torrent dropping from a cleft in the granite as if poured from the sky itself. The water doesn’t look soft or misty—it looks heavy, almost metallic, a bright vertical ribbon against the dark, weather‑worn rock. You can almost hear it: a deep, continuous roar echoing through the cold morning air.
The storm that passed earlier has left the valley in a state of restless calm. Light breaks through in angled beams, catching the waterfall and the frozen spray clinging to the cliff. The shadows are deep and velvety, giving the granite walls a sense of mass and age—like ancient cathedral pillars carved by time.

A faint frozen beard of ice clings around the plunge pool and lower lip of the falls, its texture rough and crystalline. You can almost feel the bite of the cold—air so sharp it stings your nose, the kind that makes every sound ring clearer.
The granite towers rise like monolithic guardians, their surfaces streaked with moisture from the storm. In black and white, the rock feels even more immense—its cracks, ledges, and weathered scars rendered in bold contrast. Wisps of mist drift along the cliff face, softening the edges just enough to give the scene a sense of movement.
The whole image carries a mood of solitude and power—the kind of moment you only get in winter when the crowds are gone and the valley feels wild again. It’s both peaceful and fierce, a reminder of how small you are in the presence of something this old, this tall, this alive.

#FromTheVault: #YosemiteFalls

This was captured in #Yosemite, California. It was winter and cold.

I had just purchased my #NikonD700 (2009). And I was moving from LA to Santa Fe, New Mexico. I drove up the coast saying my goodbyes to California.

Lower Yosemite Falls Black and White

The photograph opens with the commanding presence of Lower Yosemite Falls, rendered in deep, velvety black and white that heightens every texture and contrast. The waterfall descends in a silky, luminous column, its motion captured with a softness that feels almost like brushed satin. You can almost hear the low, continuous roar—steady, resonant, and echoing off the stone.

Surrounding the falls, the granite cliffs rise like ancient sentinels, their surfaces rugged and striated. In monochrome, the rock face becomes a tapestry of shadows and highlights: pale streaks where water has carved its path over centuries, darker crevices that seem to swallow the light. The cliffs feel cool and massive, as if the air around them would carry a faint mineral scent.

At the base of the falls, mist gathers in a ghostly, swirling veil, softening the transition between water and earth. You can almost imagine the fine droplets brushing your skin—cold, invigorating, and tinged with the clean scent of mountain air.

Trees frame the scene, their dark silhouettes grounding the composition. Their branches appear still, almost reverent, as if holding space for the waterfall’s relentless energy. The interplay of black and white gives the foliage a quiet, contemplative mood, contrasting with the dynamic force of the falling water.

Overall, the image feels timeless and elemental—a portrait of nature’s strength and serenity intertwined. The absence of color sharpens your attention to shape, movement, and texture, inviting you to feel the scene as much as see it.

Lower Yosemite Falls

You’re standing at the base of Lower Yosemite Falls, and the world feels alive with motion. A towering sheet of water plunges down a sheer granite face, the cascade so powerful you can almost hear its deep, rhythmic thunder vibrating through the ground. The falls erupt into a cloud of cool, drifting mist that hangs in the air like a luminous veil, softening the hard edges of the surrounding cliffs.

The granite walls rise like ancient sentinels—massive, weathered, and silver‑gray—catching the light in subtle, shifting tones. Moisture darkens the rock near the base, creating deep charcoal streaks that contrast with the brighter, sun‑touched stone above. Around the falls, pockets of lush greenery cling to the rock, their leaves glistening as if polished by the spray.

The air feels crisp and damp, carrying the scent of wet stone and pine. If you were standing there, tiny droplets would settle on your skin, cool and refreshing. The scene is both wild and serene: raw power pouring from above, yet framed by the timeless calm of Yosemite’s granite cathedral.

The photograph captures that tension beautifully—the force of the water, the softness of the mist, the stillness of the cliffs—a moment where nature feels both immense and intimate.

Yosemite Falls drops over 2,400 feet, making it one of the tallest in North America. Watching the mist rise feels like a gentle reminder that nature moves on at its own pace, and so should we. #YosemiteFalls

The Merced River with a footbridge and people walking is in the lower foreground.
Behind the bridge are trees and behind the trees a massive cliff wall steeply stretching to the top of the photo.
The upper Yosemite falls is clearly visible as it tumbles over the top of the cliff, until it becomes middle falls and then lower falls.
The trees are completely obscuring the view of the lower falls section.

My viewpoint from the shore of the swift flowing Merced River includes a glimpse of the footbridge, and beyond that is a full view of upper

Middle and lower falls are hidden by the shape of the canyon and trees.

I spent 10 days in Yosemite national Park in May 2023, the year of record snow melt and floods throughout the valley. This lake is normally a meadow with the Merced River flowing through it, but everything was flooded that spring in the river decided to take over the meadow, resulting in a beautiful reflecting pond!
