Holding up the #ZeroCarbonAct as an example of cross-party consensus seems, uh, optimistic.
National played politics down to the very final vote, and have since done all they can to shred climate action through dirty, divisive, dishonest politics.
The NZ govt will at 10am release its consultation document for the 1st #ZeroCarbonAct emissions reduction plan.
Here's the question to ask as you read it: Does it look like a fair, just plan for a nationwide economic transformation of unprecedented scale at extraordinary speed?
It's great to see the @ClimateCommNZ recommending a renewable energy not just renewable electricity target.
In the #ZeroCarbonAct consultation, when I was at @WWFNewZealand, we called for a 100% renewable energy target to be part of the Act's 2050 goals.
60% by 2035 is a start.

At the same time as recommending the first three #ZeroCarbonAct emissions budgets, the Commission has been tasked with providing advice on what a 1.5ºC aligned Paris target would look like, so government can update it before #COP26.
Awkward to see @jamespeshaw trying to pitch adopting the #ZeroCarbonAct (ten years after the UK example) and setting a partial net zero target (when many others have full 2050 net zero targets) as somehow being leading ... while our emissions still rise....
This increase reflects the good work done in passing the #ZeroCarbonAct, reforming the NZ ETS, and implementing TCFD disclosure rules – but New Zealand is still a long way short of #climate leadership or 1.5ºC alignment....
Stopping new offshore exploration is a great start - but it's not enough to achieve the #ZeroCarbonAct & #ParisAgreement goal of #1o5c. We will need to stop all new extraction from existing exploration, and even close existing fields early. (2/3)
My colleague @andy_rowell has written this great piece arguing @jacindaardern must treat the existing offshore oil & gas ban only as a start.
Just stopping (some) new exploration isn't enough to meet the #ZeroCarbonAct goal of keeping warming below 1.5ºC....
Here's the worry: That other countries, who don't have a #ZeroCarbonAct putting the 1.5ºC target into law, will see New Zealand's communication on Wednesday night as an excuse not to do their own homework and not to step up their #climate ambition.

It was young New Zealanders in @GenZeroNZ who came up with the idea of the #ZeroCarbonAct and who pushed and pushed until 119 MPs voted for it.
Big work / life update time: on Friday, I’m leaving @WWFNewZealand. That was a tough decision. I’m really proud of what our team has achieved over the last three years - from helping secure the #ZeroCarbonAct to getting Aotearoa in the global top 11 for @sciencetargets uptake.

So. Um. Nick Smith of @NZNationalParty just claimed that methane was many times worse for the #climate than carbon dioxide.
