Across the bridge where locals gathered, we fed our infatuation at the Cricketers Arms, where they played whatever was at hand a battered guitar, a drum, a broken voice. That sound still pulls me back dark wood, dark nights, his eyes holding me tight like a round loud note, our fingers grazing half-forgotten glasses. We’d leave late, wet-eyed, sometimes all that joy, so much ache. Walking home under stars, the zither still winding itself between us taut and tender, our embrace the string we didn’t name, ever tightening.

32 strings attached When I'm visiting flea markets in Germany, I sometimes see zithers, and have always passed them by. One day in September 2023, however, at the Aachener Platz fleamarket at Düsseldorf, I came across a derelict one that was marked a very affordable 5€, and when I had a closer look the vendor reduced the price to 4€. It looked like this: I was one year into my pirate luthier adventures and thought, maybe I can fix this one, so I bought it and had it sitting around in a corner for a year and a half. Now, after rediscovering the photo I took at the flea market before buying the instrument and sharing that on flickr, I got round to fixing it up. The biggest challenge was getting my head around the tuning of the harmony strings. The melody strings (above the fretted fingerboard) are tuned like a viola with a duplicate a string: CGDAA. (This is the Munich tuning, as opposed to the Viennese tuning which has a duplicate G string.) The harmony strings (away from the fingerboard) go around the circle of fifths: Eb Bb F C G D A E B F# C# G# Which makes 12 strings. And then the same thing again an octave below (bass strings), another 12. And then, depending on the model, there are variable numbers of contrabass strings descending from Eb chromatically. Mine only has three of these, so that's 27 plus 5 equals 32 strings, phew. Of these, all of the melody strings and five of the harmony strings were missing, leaving me with just 22 strings in place. Bits of wire that may have been strings in happier times were strung around the back, suggesting that somebody had hung the instrument on a wall for decorative purposes. When I tried to tune up the 22 strings (very slowly as I tried to get my head round that tuning pattern), I found that the tension warped the frame of the instrument upwards, away from its backside, with an ugly gap opening up under the tuning pegs. So I needed to relax the strings again and glue that gap shut with hide glue to make sure this can't happen. I'm glad to report that this operation was successful, and I have now all 32 strings on and tuned up to their proper pitch and the instrument has stayed in its proper shape. I also applied some teak oil to the wooden surfaces to spruce them up a bit (not sure if that's allowed on instruments and I wouldn't have dared on a violin!), and that seems to have worked as well, so the instrument now looks like this: There are still some small bits of wood missing around the edges which I'll carve and glue in at some point, but that's essentially a cosmetic issue and the instrument is playable now. The melody strings are brand new (cheap) violin strings, and the harmony strings are whatever I could find lying around that matched the requirements. I think the four higher ones were nyckelharpa strings in an earlier life, and the one at the lowest end is an old cello string. It looks a bit too bulky for this instrument but it does sound lovely for the bottom note. In theory, the F, A and C# strings are coloured red for easier orientation. Now that I know this, I can just about detect remnants of the colour and confirm that I have the right strings in the right places (apart from one F string that was missing), but it's not conspicuous enough to be real help with playing. It's also confusing for harp players used to recognising the C strings by their red colour. Oh, and when I attempted to clean up the fingerboard, I discovered a nearly invisible brand name, Sonora: I found a few zithers and lots of other instruments under that name (including outdoors tubular bells) but it doesn't seem to be an established brand name for a specific zither maker, so it didn't lead me to any information re who made my zither where. Die Zither: Es braucht nur 3 Hände Auf all unseren Fotos und Videos seht ihr das Instrument, das jeden von uns dreien seit Jahren gefesselt hat. Auch wenn wir teilweise andere Instrumente als Kinder gelernt haben oder auch jetzt noch spielen, ist dieses eine Instrument doch etwas Besonders. Doch was macht die **Zither** so besonders? Wenn ihr mich fragt, dann ist es der eigene Klang, mit dem meine Kinderlieder auf der Blockflöte vor 15 Jahren nicht mithalten konnten. Das Zitherspielen ist für mich ein Ausgleich von meinem Alltag, aber auch eine willkommene Herausforderung für mein Gehirn, da man fürs Zitherspielen drei Hände benötigt. Ja – drei Hände. Wie das funktioniert? Die Zither ist ein Saiteninstrument, mit 36 – 42 Saiten (je nach Bauweise des Instruments). Unterteilt sind die Saiten in Griffbrett- und Freisaiten. Die Griffbrettsaiten sind die ersten fünf Saiten, die über das Griffbrett gespannt sind. Ähnlich wie beispielsweise bei der Gitarre erzeugt man verschiedene Töne, indem man die Saite an verschiedenen Punkten mit den Fingern der linken Hand niederdrückt. Angeschlagen werden diese fünf Saiten mit dem Daumen der rechten Hand, auf dem ein Zitherring getragen wird. Die Freisaiten werden mit den restlichen Fingern der rechten Hand gespielt. Vielleicht fragst du dich jetzt, wie oft wir stimmen müssen oder wie lange das dauert? Wir stimmen immer – wirklich, andauernd. Der Klangkörper der Zither ist aus Holz, das sich bei Temperaturveränderungen leicht ausdehnt oder zusammenzieht, und sich somit die Saiten schnell wieder verstimmen (wie übrigens bei anderen Saiteninstrumenten auch!). Wind oder Zugluft trägt auch zu einem schnelleren Verstimmen der Saiten bei. Also zusammenfassend: wir stimmen oft und viel, mit der Zeit kommt man etwas in Übung und es kommt einem nicht mehr so vor, dass man länger das Instrument stimmt als darauf spielt. ## Arten und Bauweisen Oft wird von der Zither als ein Instrument an sich gesprochen, doch gibt es viele verschiedene Arten von Zithern. Auch wenn man in Mitteleuropa hauptsächliche die alpenländische Variante der Zither kennt, gibt es doch auf der ganzen Welt verstreut verschiedene Formen der Zither (China, Japan, Korea, Estland, Finnland, Iran, Indien). Es gibt auch verschiedene Bauweisen der Zither, bekannt sind vor allem die Harfenzither und die Konzertzither. Die am häufigsten gespielte Zither ist die Diskantzither, es gibt aber auch Elegiezithern (Altzither), Basszithern und Quintzithern. * Konzertzither (Diskantzither) * Harfenzither (Diskantzither) * Alt- oder Elegiezither (eine Quarte tiefer als die Diskantzither) * Quintzither (eine Quinte höher als die Diskantzither) * Basszither (eine Oktave tiefer als die Diskantzither) Die Bauformen unterscheiden sich in ihrer Mensur (= die Länge die eine Griffbrett-Saite frei schwingt) und in der Tonhöhe. Die Harfenzither ist von der Konzertzither sehr einfach durch ihren geschwungenen Korpus, der einer Harfenform ähnelt, zu unterschieden. Alt- und Basszithern dienen als Begleitinstrumente und sind deshalb tiefer gestimmt (eine Quarte bzw eine Oktave). Sie haben haben auch eine längere Mensur, was sie für kleine Hände manchmal schwierige zu spielen macht, da Bünde am Griffbrett weiter auseinander liegen. Eine Quintzither ist wiederum höher (eine Quinte) gestimmt eine auch kleiner gebaut. ## Die Zither-Stimmung Damit noch nicht genug! Es gibt zwei verschiedene Stimmungen der Zither. Die Münchner Stimmung (auch Standardstimmung oder Normalbesaitung genannt), die, wie der Name verrät, hauptsächlich in Bayern gespielt wird, aber auch im Westen Österreichs. Der Hintergedanke bei dieser Stimmung war, das Spielen klassischer Literatur auf der Zither zu erleichtern. Im Osten Österreichs (Wien, Wien Umgebung, teilweise in der Steiermark) wird die Wiener Stimmung gespielt. Sie wird nur mehr selten gespielt und gelehrt. Neben der typischen Wiener Salon- und Schrammelmusik gibt es auch klassische Literatur, die speziell für die Wiener Stimmung geschrieben wurde. Darunter fallen zum Beispiel die _„G’schichten aus dem Wienerwald“_ von Johann Strauss (Sohn) oder auch die gesamte Filmmusik von _„Der dritte Mann“_ von Anton Karas (mit der weltberühmten Titelmelodie). Die Wiener Stimmung hatte ihre Hochzeit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wo es in einigen Außenbezirken von Wien quasi zu einer Zither-Explosion gekommen ist – heute würde man Hype dazu sagen. Auch deshalb wurde die „Wiener Stimmung und Spielweise der Zither“ 2017 als immaterielles Kulturerbe der UNESCO aufgenommen. Da wir auf der Wiener Besaitung spielen, möchte ich noch kurz auf ihre Besonderheiten eingehen, die den einzigartigen Klang ausmachen: Während die Griffbrettsaiten der Münchner Stimmung auf a‘, a‘, d‘, g und c gestimmt sind, sind die der Wiener Besaitung auf a‘, d‘, g‘, g und c gestimmt. Die sogenannte Hilfssaite g‘ ist zu einem großen Teil für den einzigartigen, zweistimmigen Klang verantwortlich.
