It's 'Worsdall Wednesday', and this week Frank's off up the shops, to visit the Pettigrew & Stephens department store in Sauchiehall Street - demolished for the Sauchiehall Street Centre - a bad deal in anyone's books!

The former Prince's Dock Auxillary Accumulator Tower opposite the old Govan Town Hall on Govan Road in Glasgow. Built in 1911, its design is based on a campanile, a free standing Italian bell tower.

A slightly belated podcast alert! Here’s me chatting to @2000ad.bsky.social's @molcher.bsky.social about comics, crime fiction, science fiction, historical fiction & some glam real-life stuff, such as selling Scotch pies at Dens Park football stadium way back when...

A slightly belated shoutout to the new novel by Doghouse Reilly (actually @johntomlinson24.bsky.social & Glenn Dakin), currently being serialized on Substack. One advantage to being late to the party – Chapter 2 is already available...

One small clarification: In the interview, I get mixed up & say Steve Macmanus had stepped back in as interim editor of 2000AD. He was actually group editor. The original commissioning editor – or Tharg, for those in the know – of Nikolai Dante was, of course, @johntomlinson24.bsky.social.

The remains of what I think is part of the old Meadowside Ferry port. The Meadowside Ferry was one of around ten different ferry routes which used to criss-cross the Clyde in Glasgow.

Today, for Worsdall Wednesday, Frank’s taking us for elevenses – a cuppa and wee scone – at Kate Cranston’s Crown Lunch and Tea Rooms, on Argyle Street.
Architect David Barclay's 1899 watercolour of the block in its heyday is a joy.

Born 212 years ago yesterday, John Thomas Rochead was an architect who, while not as prominent in the public consciousness of Glasgow as some, left an indelible mark on the city and across Scotland.

Looking down into Union Street, Glasgow, in 1947. To the right we can see Boots at ground floor level. Next to that is the famous Peacock's tea rooms, with Smart's furniture store in the centre of the image.

Aww, thanks, Louise. I usually reckon time moves twice as fast as I think it does, but in this case, it might be three times as fast...

Always loved that splash page, one of @simonfraser.bsky.social's first pics of Nikolai, catching the character perfectly. I should also point out ex-Tharg @dvbishop.com edited the early years of the series, initially commissioned by @johntomlinson24.bsky.social.
30 years old next year, though😲?

Looking south down Buchanan St in 1975. The plants and shrubs of the street's early pedestrianisation are evident. Vehicle access was phased out in stages, starting in 1972, until what had been one of Glasgow's main traffic arteries was fully pedestrianised in 1978.

Old and new Clyde crossings in Glasgow. On the left is the former southern entrance (known as the South Rotunda) to the Glasgow Harbour Tunnel, which opened in the 1890s and closed to vehicles in the 1940s and to pedestrians in 1980.

Len Deighton obituary: Len Deighton: How The Observer's cookery cartoonist became a master spy writer Best-selling spy author whose workaday secret agents were a world away from the glamour of James Bond.

RIP Len Deighton. "When you make a book, it's like making a hand grenade. It's a dull process but when you throw it the person at the other end gets the effect."
